The Rivian R1T has been a top-selling electric pickup since its debut in 2021. It immediately stood out by breaking away from the traditional tough, aggressive styling that has long defined this segment, offering instead a clean and modern design vision. Compared to rivals like the Hummer EV or Cybertruck, the R1T feels more approachable while still delivering serious capability. But design is only part of the story. What truly lies beneath this truck’s bold new approach in terms of performance, technology, and everyday usability? Here, we cover the most important and intriguing questions about the Rivian R1T.

Who Builds the Rivian R1T?

All Rivian models, including the R1T, are built at Rivian’s massive 3.3-million-square-foot facility in Normal, Illinois. This plant is soon to be expanded with a new supplier park that will not only create 100 additional jobs but also cut shipping distances and other production costs. These improvements are expected to make operations more efficient and could eventually help reduce the overall price of the R1T. Since the truck is manufactured in the U.S., it qualifies for federal EV tax incentives, though not every trim is eligible, so buyers should always confirm the specific model’s status before making a purchase.

What’s the Price of a Rivian R1T?

The Rivian R1T offers a wide range of trims to suit different driving styles, performance preferences, and budgets. Buyers can choose from dual-, tri-, or even quad-motor configurations, each delivering its own level of power, acceleration, and off-road capability. R1T Dual – From $77,990;

R1T Tri – From $100,990;

Rivian Battery Pack (Image: Electrek)

Which Battery Pack Powers the Rivian R1T?

Rivian currently offers three different battery pack options for the R1T: Standard, Large, and Max. The Standard pack provides 92.5 kWh of usable capacity, the Large pack delivers 108.5 kWh, and the Max pack is equipped with an impressive 140 kWh of usable capacity.

However, before the 2025 update, the R1T came with a different set of battery options. In addition to the packs mentioned above, Rivian also offered a Standard+ pack with 121 kWh of usable capacity. At first glance, it may seem unusual that the older Standard+ offered more capacity than today’s Large pack. But there’s no trick here, the earlier batteries were simply larger and heavier than the modern ones. For comparison, the old Standard pack had 106 kWh usable capacity, the Large offered 131 kWh, and the Max pack was slightly bigger as well at 141 kWh.

So, why did Rivian move to smaller-capacity batteries, and did this decision affect the truck’s driving range? The answer lies in new battery technology and efficiency improvements; details you’ll discover in the next section.

How Far Can the Rivian R1T Go on a Single Charge?

The Rivian R1T is widely regarded as one of the top electric trucks when it comes to range capabilities. Equipped with the Max battery pack, the latest R1T can deliver up to 420 miles of EPA-estimated range, which is an excellent achievement for such a large, heavy-duty electric pickup. But how do the other trims compare, and how close are these figures to real-world results?

Here’s the official EPA-estimated range breakdown for the current lineup:

R1T Dual Standard – 270 miles;

R1T Dual – 329 miles;

R1T Tri – 371 miles;

R1T Quad – 374 miles.

In practice, real-world testing paints a slightly different picture. For example, the R1T with the Max pack and 21-inch wheels achieved an impressive 390 miles of actual driving range, which, while just under the EPA figure, still proves its capability as a long-distance hauler.

That said, the R1T isn’t the outright leader in range among electric trucks. Competitors like the GMC Sierra EV have demonstrated even higher real-world results, with an astounding 507 miles on a single charge.

How Long Does It Take to Charge the Rivian R1T?

To properly answer how long it takes to charge the Rivian R1T, it’s important to look at each trim individually, since every version comes with a different battery size. We gathered the available trims and calculated their average charging time from 10% to 80% on fast public DC chargers:

R1T Dual Standard – ~26 minutes;

R1T Dual – ~28 minutes;

R1T Tri – ~36 minutes;

R1T Quad – ~36 minutes.

As these numbers show, larger battery packs naturally require more time to charge, but the gap in charging speed is not nearly as wide as the difference in driving range. This makes the R1T quite efficient when it comes to balancing long-distance capability with relatively quick charging sessions.
