GMC Sierra EV Overview: Is This Electric Truck Worth It?

At first glance, the Sierra EV might seem like just another electric truck from General Motors. Yet, that’s only part of the picture.

Technically, the Sierra EV is built on the same GM Ultium-based platform as both the Chevrolet Silverado EV and the GMC Hummer EV. That means it comes equipped with the industry’s largest 205 kWh battery pack, advanced four-wheel steering, and an 800V electrical system capable of peak 350 kW DC fast charging.

While the Chevrolet Silverado EV WT leads the segment with its remarkable range, it remains primarily a work-focused electric truck, lacking many of the high-end features found in the RST Max Range trim. The key to its remarkable performance lies in its lighter weight, achieved by fewer features, which enhances overall efficiency. Comparing the top versions, the Sierra EV Denali Max Range delivered 507 miles in independent tests, while the Silverado EV RST Max Range managed just 484 miles. That makes the Sierra EV, with identical underpinnings, a more efficient performer than its Chevy counterpart.

Additionally, many customers also noted that the overall quality, particularly the interior materials, is superior to those found in the Chevrolet rival, where cheaper plastics and less tactilely pleasing materials are more common. Based on this comparison and considering that Chevrolet models may not remain as efficient in the future, we’d say the Sierra EV is definitely worth considering as it is one of the most efficient trucks available on the market. Now, let’s take a closer look at the trims available in the Sierra EV lineup.

Sierra EV Trim Guide

Thinking about getting a new GMC electric truck? Here’s a complete guide to the GMC Sierra EV lineup, covering both available and upcoming trims, along with the key strengths of each version to help you pick the right fit.

Sierra EV Elevation

The new base trim of the Sierra EV, the Elevation, is expected to become available later this month. It will come with a Standard Range battery, with the option to upgrade to the Extended Range battery. As the base trim, Elevation will feature 18-inch wheels, while options like Super Cruise driver assistance, 800V architecture, and 7.2 kW Energy Transfer off-boarding power will be available.

Sierra EV AT4

A new trim debuting this year is the AT4, designed for off-road adventures thanks to an extra two inches of ground clearance and Terrain mode. Positioned above the Elevation trim, the AT4 also comes standard with 4-Wheel Steer with CrabWalk, Super Cruise, the 10.2kW Energy Transfer Pro off-board power system, and subtle interior and exterior enhancements. Buyers of the AT4 can choose between two battery options: Extended Range and Max Range.

Sierra EV Denali

The top-tier Denali trim, available since the start of production, remains the most luxurious option in the Sierra EV lineup. Soon, it will be offered with three battery choices, Standard, Extended, and Max Range, giving buyers greater flexibility. As for features, the Denali stands out with 24-inch wheels etched with the Denali logo, a high-end interior with premium seating materials, and the available Air Ride Adaptive suspension for enhanced comfort and performance.
