Rivian’s R2 has been assigned vehicle identification numbers approaching 10,000, suggesting the electric SUV’s production ramp is continuing ahead of the company’s planned move to a second manufacturing shift later this month.

Publicly reported VINs reached the 9,400s on Aug. 28, according to buyers posting their vehicle details online. One Southern California buyer reported receiving an R2 VIN in the 9,400 range at about 10 a.m. Pacific time that day. The buyer had placed an order for an R2 Performance on Aug. 18.

Other buyers reported VINs below 9,000 over the following two days. A Georgia buyer identified as Mike reported an 8,890 VIN for a white R2 with a Coastal Cloud interior and 21-inch wheels. The vehicle was assigned Aug. 29 and had a delivery appointment scheduled for Sept. 4.

Another buyer reported receiving a VIN just below 9,000 on the same day and said the purchase would be completed the following day. All three vehicles were ordered Aug. 18.

The VIN figures do not represent completed R2 production on a one-for-one basis. Rivian assigns VINs in batches based on build slots and vehicle configurations rather than strictly by order date. A VIN can therefore be assigned before a vehicle has been built and well before it is delivered to a customer.

Rivian R2 production pace

The recent VIN increase follows several changes in the pace at which R2 serial numbers have been assigned.

Rivian was assigning roughly 310 R2 VINs per day in mid-July, when the reported count increased by about 1,300 in less than a week to reach 4,100. The pace then slowed substantially as the count passed 5,000 near the end of July and settled at roughly 500 VINs per week as it approached 6,000 in mid-August, according to EV.

The pace subsequently accelerated again. More than 1,200 VINs were assigned over four days as the reported count passed 7,200.

From Aug. 10 to Aug. 24, the count increased from about 5,950 to 8,316, equivalent to roughly 169 VINs per day. Over the following five days, excluding the unusually high Friday reading, the increase was closer to 115 per day.

Maintaining that latter pace would put the reported VIN count at 10,000 during the first few days of September.

Rivian has said it expects to deliver between 20,000 and 25,000 R2s during 2026. The company has also targeted 5,000 R2 deliveries in California and raised its overall 2026 delivery guidance to between 65,000 and 70,000 vehicles across its lineup.

Second shift coming

The latest VIN activity comes as Rivian prepares to expand R2 production at its Normal, Illinois, plant.

CEO RJ Scaringe said during the company’s July 30 earnings call that R2 production had started on a single shift and that Rivian expected to move to two shifts by the end of the third quarter.

Chief Operating Officer Javier Varela said the second shift was not expected to contribute significant additional volume during the third quarter. Instead, the larger production impact is expected to come in the fourth quarter.

That puts the planned expansion near the end of September, roughly a month after the latest batch of publicly reported VINs approached 10,000.

Reservations remain substantial

Publicly tracked R2 reservations also provide an indication of demand, although the data are not an official Rivian tally.

Rivian Forums maintains separate community trackers for R2 orders and VINs and for reservations that have not yet been converted into orders. The orders and VIN tracker supplied the data behind the reported 8,316 VIN count and subsequent numbers.

The separate reservation tracker had recorded 2,696 reservations as of Aug. 29.

Among those reservations, 55.1% belonged to people who were not current R1 owners, while 44.9% came from existing Rivian customers. Among current owners, 48.3% had an R1T and another 48.3% had an R1S, while 3.3% owned both models.

When asked whether they intended to keep their existing R1 and add an R2, 53.9% of respondents said they would, 26.7% were undecided and 19.4% said they would not.

The figures should be viewed as a sample rather than a census because participation in the community trackers is voluntary. Rivian has not publicly disclosed its total R2 reservation, order, production or delivery figures.

Separate data from Cox Automotive indicated that about 789 R2s had reached U.S. buyers by the end of June, the model’s first month on sale.

With the reported R2 VIN count now approaching 10,000 and a second production shift scheduled to begin near the end of the third quarter, Rivian is entering an important phase of the vehicle’s production ramp. The larger test will be whether the additional shift allows the company to accelerate deliveries enough during the fourth quarter to meet its full-year R2 target of 20,000 to 25,000 vehicles.
