Rivian Recalls Nearly 99,000 EVs Over Rearview Camera Software Bug

Rivian is recalling 98,828 electric vehicles over a software bug that could obstruct the rearview camera image with a notification, potentially reducing the driver’s view behind the vehicle.

More than 95% of the affected vehicles have already received the software fix through over-the-air updates, meaning most owners will receive recall notices after the issue has already been addressed.

Recall covers R1T, R1S and R2

The recall covers 34,088 R1T pickups from the 2022 through 2026 model years, 62,259 R1S SUVs from the 2022 through 2027 model years, and 2,481 R2 vehicles from the 2027 model year.

According to Rivian’s recall filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the software could display a notification over the rearview camera image, according to RivianTrackr. NHTSA said the obstruction could “reduce the driver’s view behind the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.”

Rivian said it is unaware of any accidents, injuries or fatalities associated with the issue.

Software fix was already deployed

Rivian addressed the problem through software updates before most affected owners are expected to receive their recall notices. The fix was included in software version 2026.23 for R1 vehicles and version 2026.31 for R2.

More than 95% of the vehicles covered by the recall had already received the applicable software update, according to the source.

The recall nevertheless remains necessary to formally document the safety issue and notify affected vehicle owners. Rivian’s OTA updates allow the company to address the software problem remotely without requiring owners to bring their vehicles to a service center.
