Xiaomi’s SU7 Ultra prototype electric vehicle (EV) has set a new lap record for a four-door vehicle at Germany’s legendary Nürburgring circuit. The electric hypercar completed the grueling 12.9 mile Nordschleife in just 6 minutes and 46.874 seconds, toppling the previous record by over 10 seconds.

Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun took to X to announce the record-breaking run, calling it a remarkable accomplishment for the young automaker. “As a newcomer to the automotive industry, Xiaomi has shown great determination and courage by taking on the Nürburgring challenge with its first car,” Lei wrote.

In detail, the Xiaomi SU7 Ultra is no ordinary EV. Equipped with a triple-motor all-wheel-drive system developed in-house, the prototype produces a staggering 1,548 horsepower, allowing it to rocket from 0 to 60 mph in just 1.97 seconds and reach top speeds exceeding 220 mph.

Motorsports veteran David Pittard, who recently won the grueling 24 Hours of Nürburgring endurance race, drove the record-setting lap. Pittard expertly navigated the SU7 Ultra’s 1,900 kg frame through the Nordschleife’s 73 corners, taking advantage of its massive carbon-ceramic brakes, Bilstein suspension, and advanced torque-vectoring system.

Overcoming Challenges

Xiaomi had to overcome significant obstacles to achieve this milestone. The company initially booked time at the Nürburgring in January and October but was foiled by inclement weather each time. It was not until October 24th that Xiaomi was granted a rare one-hour test window, which the team made the most of.

Future Plans and Production Model

As a result, this record-breaking feat is just the first phase of Xiaomi’s ambitious Nürburgring strategy. The company plans to return in 2025 with a production version of the SU7 Ultra, aiming to claim the outright production car lap record.

“Its debut marks not only an outstanding feat but also the start of an exciting new chapter,” stated Lei Jun. Notably, the production SU7 Ultra is expected to carry over much of the prototype’s core hardware, including its triple-motor drivetrain and massive battery pack. Pricing is not confirmed but its launch date will be in the first half of 2025.

With Xiaomi’s record-setting run at the Nürburgring, it is a stunning announcement for the young automaker. It demonstrates the company’s engineering prowess and signals its goal to compete at the highest levels of electric performance.
