SK On Takes Bronze At The 2024 Edison Awards For Its Cobalt-Free Battery In EVs

SK On has received more accolades in the electric vehicle (EV) industry by winning bronze at the 2024 Edison Awards for its cobalt-free battery technology. This award was given in the Smart Transportation category and highlights SK On’s goal of innovating battery technology in EVs for the global market. 

The Edison Awards honors the celebration regarding innovation, where SK On’s cobalt-free battery technology reaches new heights that fit the description. The company also won bronze last year for its NCM9 battery, marking a consecutive second win in its battery technology. 

SK On’s cobalt-free battery consists of the action to remove cobalt from NCM cathode material compositions, which restricts the lifespan of batteries because of structural instability. Furthermore, the reliance on cobalt in the batteries of EVs uses mining practices that cause more environmental concerns. As a result, SK On has removed that concern while retaining structural stability and energy density. 

Kim Sang-jin, Head of Platform Research at SK On, expressed the win for its cobalt-free battery technology at the 2024 Edison Awards stating, “We are honored to receive the Bronze award at the prestigious Edison Awards 2024 for our cobalt-free battery,” he said. “This recognition underscores our commitment to pushing the boundaries of innovation while championing environmental sustainability. SK On remains dedicated to developing battery technologies that deliver positive environmental and societal impacts.”

SK On has made partnerships with many companies including Ford by investing in solid-state battery technology. The company also partnered with Hyundai on a battery production facility worth $5 billion in Bartow County, Georgia. With SK On looking forward to advancing its battery technology for the global EV market, the EV technology regarding batteries is heading on a positive route that will elevate the EV technology in sustainable ways.
