Rivian plans to let its vehicles run AI agents from outside companies, including firms such as Anthropic, CEO RJ Scaringe said at TechCrunch Disrupt.
The company has not announced a rollout timeline, but it is expected to provide more information at its Autonomy & AI Day on December 9. The planned expansion builds on Rivian Assistant, the automaker’s existing in-vehicle AI system.
Rivian Assistant already uses an in-house agentic framework to interpret requests and route them to the appropriate software functions. Scaringe compared the system to a traffic light: simpler requests can be handled by a model running locally in the vehicle, while more complex tasks are sent to the cloud, where the system selects an appropriate model.
Google Calendar has been the only external connection available since May, according to RivianTrackr. Supporting additional AI providers will require further software integration by Rivian and coordination with the companies developing those assistants.
Scaringe described a scenario in which a driver could ask the vehicle to activate its ventilated seats while continuing a conversation about what to cook for guests on Friday. The assistant could draw on the conversation history already established with the same AI service on a phone or laptop.
That would allow the vehicle to use context from an existing assistant relationship rather than treating every in-car interaction as a separate conversation.

Scaringe also drew a clear boundary around vehicle operation. AI agents will not be given control over safety-critical functions such as braking and steering.
The planned integration would therefore focus on assistance, information and connected services rather than handing driving authority to third-party AI systems.
Rivian’s approach follows the launch of Tesla’s Grok integration, but the ability to bring an existing assistant and its conversation history into a vehicle could offer a different kind of functionality.
The timing and list of supported AI providers remain unconfirmed. Rivian’s Autonomy & AI Day in December is the next expected opportunity for the company to explain how the integrations will work and which services it plans to support.
