Mercedes-Benz is set to redefine electric vehicle (EV) efficiency with its upcoming CLA-Class, promising to become the most energy-efficient EV on the market when it launches for the 2026 model year.

Unmatched Energy Efficiency

The new electric sedan contains an exceptional efficiency rating of 12 kWh/100km (5.2 miles per kWh), surpassing current market leaders like the Lucid Air. This remarkable achievement comes courtesy of Mercedes’ new Modular Architecture (MMA), a flexible platform capable of supporting both electric and hybrid powertrains.

Powertrain and Battery Options

Moreover, key technological highlights include a sophisticated powertrain with a 200kW rear-axle electric motor, with all-wheel drive (AWD) models adding an additional 80kW front-axle unit. The EV will offer two battery options: an 85 kWh premium battery with silicon oxide anode technology and a smaller 58 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery.

The premium battery features an 800V configuration capable of charging up to 320kW. Mercedes claims the battery can add 300 km (186 miles) of range in just 10 minutes. The company even demonstrated the CLA’s charging prowess by traveling 3,717 km (2,310 miles) in 24 hours at the Nardo test track, maintaining an average speed of 96 mph including charging time.

Smart Thermal Management

Furthermore, the EV also features innovative thermal management, using an air-to-air heat pump that can capture heat from the motor, battery, and ambient air to efficiently heat the cabin – a critical feature for maintaining performance in cold weather.

In addition to the ongoing North American Charging Standard (NACS) transition, Mercedes will equip the CLA with both CCS and NACS charging ports, ensuring maximum charging flexibility.

“This car and platform are a very big deal for Mercedes-Benz,” the company stated, noting it represents a significant comeback after some setbacks with their previous EQ-Class EVs. Following the CLA’s launch, Mercedes plans to introduce two additional SUVs using the same platform.

A Major Step for Mercedes-Benz
