The “Born In Affalterbach” Off-Roader Combines High Performance With Electrification

Mercedes-AMG has unveiled its first-ever in-house developed electric vehicle (EV), built on the brand’s proprietary AMG.EA electric high-performance platform. The full-size off-roader, “Born in Affalterbach,” represents a new milestone as it continues to electrify its lineup.
According to Mercedes-Benz, this new SUV will be the second model constructed on the AMG.EA platform, following the brand’s first all-electric AMG.EA model currently undergoing testing. The project marks the sixth vehicle to be fully developed by the performance specialists from Affalterbach, joining the likes of the iconic GT, SL, and SLS models.
“SUVs have been among our most popular models for many years,” stated Michael Schiebe, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH and Head of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class & Mercedes-Maybach divisions. “With the ‘Born in Affalterbach’ SUV, we are responding to this trend by offering our customers a truly captivating high-performance off-roader based on the AMG.EA platform.”
High-performance SUVs have long been a core offering for AMG, dating back over 25 years to the pioneering launch of the ML 55 AMG. The brand’s lineup of performance-focused off-roaders has since expanded to include the GLA, GLB, GLC, GLE, GLS, and EQE SUV models, with the iconic Mercedes-AMG G 63 remaining the flagship of the lineup.
The new “Born in Affalterbach” SUV will be the second model to utilize the AMG.EA platform, which the company says follows a philosophy of “AMG First, EV Second.” This means the vehicle will not only excel as an electric car but willalso embody the core AMG qualities of emotion and performance.

“Our new high-performance architecture follows a clear philosophy: ‘AMG First, EV Second’,” Schiebe explained. “This means that the vehicles not only excel as electric vehicles but also embody the core AMG qualities of emotion and performance.”
Furthermore, initial test drives of the development vehicles are expected to take place this winter, as Mercedes-AMG gears up for the exciting expansion of its electric high-performance offerings.
As a result, the new full-size SUV is set to rival upcoming models from Porsche and BMW, further solidifying AMG’s position in the rapidly growing electric SUV segment.
