GMC Powers Entire Hummer EV Desert Commercial Using a Single Sierra EV

General Motors just demonstrated the off-grid potential of its electric pickups in dramatic fashion. A new 12-minute behind-the-scenes video shows a full commercial for the GMC Hummer EV being filmed entirely on battery power from a single GMC Sierra EV AT4 without a single generator or external power source.

Sierra EV supplies all power for lights, cameras, and action

The shoot took place deep in the desert, where the Sierra EV acted as a mobile power hub for the entire production team. Every light, camera, and monitor on set was plugged directly into the truck’s outlets, which include multiple 120-volt ports and a 240-volt outlet. Filming stretched from the afternoon into the night as crews captured sweeping shots of the Hummer EV driving through sand dunes and camping under the stars.

What surprised the team most was how silent the set remained. With no gas-powered generators humming in the background, only the sound of the desert surrounded them, according to GM Authority. Even after powering the shoot and driving 75 miles in extreme heat, the Sierra EV’s battery dropped from 100% to just 66% charge, a testament to its enormous 205 kWh battery pack.

A showcase of what electric trucks can really do

GM designed the Sierra EV to handle heavy-duty workloads while doubling as a rolling energy source. The truck’s battery offers up to 478 miles of range and enough capacity to power tools, camping gear, and, as this shoot proved, a full production crew. The experiment underscores a growing trend among EV manufacturers: highlighting the practical versatility of electric trucks beyond transportation.

For GM, the project was both a creative challenge and a proof-of-concept, demonstrating how electric mobility can enable quiet, emission-free work in remote locations. It’s also an early look at how the automaker plans to position its electric lineup as capable, sustainable, and self-sufficient.
