Genesis Motor Europe has announced its transition to a fully electrified brand by 2025, representing a major acceleration of the luxury automaker’s electric vehicle (EV) plans since its European market entry in 2021, reflecting changing consumer preferences and stricter environmental regulations across the continent.

Key Models Leading the Transition

The transition will unfold through a carefully orchestrated product strategy. Genesis will offer three cornerstone EVs in its 2025 lineup: an updated Electrified G80 sedan featuring an extended wheelbase and increased range, a refreshed Electrified GV70 SUV with enhanced battery performance, and a redesigned GV60, which stands as the brand’s first vehicle built on a dedicated electric platform.

The success of Genesis’s current electric offerings has already established strong market acceptance, with EVs accounting for around 80% of the brand’s sales in the previous year. The GV60, leveraging Hyundai’s advanced E-GMP platform, has emerged as the brand’s bestseller, followed by the Electrified GV70 and Electrified G80 models.

Future Electrification Plans

Looking beyond 2025, Genesis plans to diversify its electrified portfolio further. The company has announced the development of the GV60 Magma, a high-performance EV that aims to showcase the dynamic capabilities possible with electric powertrains. In an interesting strategic nuance, Genesis has also revealed plans to introduce hybrid technology to complement its fully electric lineup, though these hybrid models are not expected to reach the market until 2027.

Moreover, the transition away from combustion engines will be managed gradually, with Genesis continuing to sell its existing petrol and diesel-powered models—including the G70 saloon, G70 Shooting Brake, GV70, and GV80—until current stock is depleted. Some models have already sold out, underscoring the market’s readiness for electrification.

Brand Director Jonny Miller emphasized the customer-centric nature of this transformation stating, “Since arriving in the UK, Genesis has led the way in premium electrification. We’re committed to responding to customer and market feedback, and we’re confident our transition to an electric range, joined by future hybrid models, is the right direction.”

Beyond product development, Genesis is making a notable entry into motorsports with the GMR-001 Hypercar, designed for the LMDh program. This racing initiative serves a dual purpose: showcasing the brand’s technical capabilities while providing a development platform for technologies that will eventually benefit their road cars.

Expansion Plans Across Europe

Furthermore, the company’s ambitions extend beyond its current markets in the United Kingdom (UK), Germany, and Switzerland, with plans to expand its European presence through a portfolio specifically tailored to European consumers. This expansion aligns with Genesis’s broader environmental commitments, including a target to achieve carbon net zero by 2035.

As traditional luxury automakers race to establish their electric credentials, Genesis’s rapid transition from a newcomer to a fully electrified brand indicates the accelerating pace of change in the automotive industry. The success of this strategy could provide valuable insights for other automakers contemplating similar transformations in the evolving European automotive landscape.
