BorgWarner eTVD System Is A First-Of-Its-Kind Technology And Its HVH220 eMotor Comes With Peak Efficiencies Surpassing 97%

BorgWarner has revealed groundbreaking advancements in electric vehicle (EV) technology by setting a new benchmark for performance and efficiency. With the introduction of its electric Torque Vectoring and Disconnect (eTVD) system for battery electric vehicles (BEVs), along with collaborating on two high-voltage hairpins (HVH) eMotor business with XPeng, BorgWarner continues to drive the future of electric mobility forward.

For the eTVD system, it arrives as a first-of-its-kind technology made to improve the performance profile of EVs while maximizing efficiency. This includes smart control wheel torque to boost stability while improving traction during launch and acceleration. The eTVD system will be installed in the Polestar 3 SUV and shortly be added to models for a major European OEM.
BorgWarner’s eTVD system also provides a 3-in-1 solution, which includes substituting the differential and featuring torque vectoring and an on-demand disconnect function. Preventing unnecessary brake interventions will also cut down on harshness and vibration and bring less wear and tear on brakes and tires. This not only improves EV performance but also reduces particle emissions.
Volker Weng, Vice President of BorgWarner Inc. and President BorgWarner Drivetrain and Battery Systems, expressed the importance of these advancements on EV technology stating, “With the market transitioning to more software-defined modules and vehicles, it is critical to have sophisticated systems in place, like our eTVD, that can precisely and quickly calculate, predict and control vehicle behavior across a wide range of situations.”
In parallel with its eTVD innovation, BorgWarner also secured additional eMotor business with XPeng which includes BorgWarner’s advanced oil-cooled 800V eMotor systems. The cooled 800V eMotor systems will be tailored for two upcoming XPeng SUV models with production expected to start in 2025.

Particularly, BorgWarner’s HVH220 eMotor is also featured with its high-voltage hairpin winding technology that operates within an 800V propulsion system and delivers high power and torque density while improving efficiency and durability through its specs of generating up to 300kW of power and reaching a maximum speed of 18,000 rpm. The HVH220 eMotor also comes with peak efficiencies surpassing 97% according to BorgWarner. In addition, its engineered oil-cooled solutions optimizes heat transfer and overall thermal management efficiency.
Dr. Stefan Demmerle, President and General Manager of BorgWarner PowerDrive Systems, expressed excitement about the collaboration with XPeng stating, “As we continuously evolve our HVH technology, we are dedicated to delivering maximum efficiency for our customer’s two future SUV models.”
Ultimately, BorgWarner’s groundbreaking eTVD system in Polestar 3 SUVs and collaborative eMotor solutions with XPeng is noticed by the EV industry for its innovative actions. With these new cutting-edge technologies being developed by BorgWarner, the company is redefining further possibilities of electric mobility solutions.
