Acura Set To Develop All-Electric Supercar Inspired By The NSX For 2027 To 2028

Acura officially announced plans to develop an all-electric vehicle (EV) inspired by its iconic NSX model, confirmed by Shinji Aoyama, global executive vice president of Honda during a media roundtable at Monterey Car Week.

In detail, Aoyama stated that the new EV is aimed for release in 2027 or 2028. While it may not carry the NSX nameplate, Aoyama described it as an “NSX-type of vehicle,” suggesting it will embody the spirit and performance characteristics of its predecessors.

The upcoming electric supercar will be built on Honda’s new dedicated EV platform, known as the “0 Series” architecture. This platform, set to debut in 2026, focuses on a thin and lightweight design, crucial for maintaining the low center of gravity and performance expected from a high-end sports car.

Acura’s decision to electrify its flagship performance model aligns with the brand’s broader strategy to transition towards EVss. Jon Ikeda, Acura’s brand officer, had previously hinted at this direction, stating in 2021 that if the NSX were to return, it would likely be all-electric.

The new electric supercar is expected to be produced at Honda’s production plant near Marysville, Ohio. This plant, which previously produced the second-generation NSX, is currently being retooled as part of Honda’s EV Hub initiative to support electric vehicle production.

While details about the car’s performance specifications remain under wraps, Aoyama confirmed that it will not use solid-state batteries. Instead, it will leverage the lightweight design principles of Honda’s new EV platform to achieve the performance levels expected of a cutting-edge supercar.

The original NSX, introduced in the 1990s, made waves with its advanced aluminum construction and innovative technologies. The second-generation model, which ended production in 2022, featured a hybrid powertrain delivering over 500 horsepower. Now, this upcoming all-electric version aims to continue the NSX legacy of pushing technological boundaries in the supercar segment.

As anticipation builds for this new electric supercar, the EV market and industry observers will be keenly watching for further details about its design, performance capabilities, and whether it will ultimately bear the storied NSX name.
