Tesla Offers Range-Boosting Software Upgrades For Model Y RWD

Tesla has started the roll out its new “energy boost” option for recent buyers of its Model Y rear-wheel-drive (RWD) electric vehicle (EV) model, allowing them to unlock extra battery capacity for a price. 

Tesla had previously revealed that its Model Y contained larger batteries with promises to offer software unlocks that would add 40 to 60 miles of range for $1,500 to $2,000. Now, it appears these upgrades are available as the “energy boost” option is in the Tesla app for Model Y owners.

However, the extra offerings differ slightly from the initial announcement:

• A $1,600 upgrade promising “up to 50 miles” of additional range

• A $1,000 upgrade offering “up to 30 miles” of additional range

Interestingly, these figures are relatively lower than the previously stated 40 to 60 miles for $1,500 to $2,000. Moreover, Tesla included a disclaimer stating that the estimates are based on internal modeling and may vary depending on factors such as battery age and driving behaviors.

As of now, the upgrade is currently only available in the United States (U.S.) and represents a considerable range increase of around 15% for some models. Nevertheless, these figures are based on Tesla’s internal modeling rather than EPA-cycle testing as real-world results may differ.

With this new software unlock, they are likely to be welcomed by Model Y RWD owners looking to extend their EV’s range. For many, these software-unlocked improvements will bring their earlier Model Y RWD units close to the capabilities of the Long Range model, which offers around 320 miles of range.

As Tesla continues to evolve its EV lineup with the Model Y topping Cars.com’s list of most American-made vehicles, the EV industry will anticipate the Model Y to eventually receive more upgrades similar to this software unlock.
