In a quiet but noteworthy development, Tesla has eliminated the no-resale clause from its Cybertruck electric vehicle (EV) sales agreement as the company ramps up production and broadens the availability of its highly anticipated electric pickup.

The clause, which was implemented at the launch of the Cybertruck, prohibited buyers from reselling their EVs within the first year of ownership. Violators faced potential penalties of $50,000 or more and risked being blacklisted from future Tesla purchases as this policy aimed to curb speculation and maintain control over the initial distribution of the EV.

Tesla Cybertruck Re-Sale Stance

However, as Tesla catches up with demand and streamlines its production capabilities, the company appears to be relaxing its stance. The Cybertruck, which started deliveries in November 2023, is now more readily available. Buyers can order directly through Tesla’s online configurator without the need for reservations.

Despite the previous restrictions, some early Cybertruck owners did attempt to resell their EVs, with varying degrees of success. Tesla reportedly took action in some cases, canceling orders and revoking purchasing privileges for those who violated the agreement.

However, by March 2024, around four months after initial deliveries began, the resale market for Cybertrucks had already shown signs of cooling. As of now, Tesla has not made an official announcement regarding this change.

This policy reversal may signal Tesla’s growing confidence in its production capabilities and the stabilizing demand for the Cybertruck. Recently, the EV was launched in the Canadian market starting at CAD 137,990 ($100,500).

As Tesla’s decision to remove the no-resale clause normalizes EV sales and ownership, it remains to be seen how this change will affect the secondary market for Cybertrucks and whether other automakers will follow suit with similar policies for their EV models.
