The Albuquerque Plant Is Expected To Create 900 Jobs And Cement New Mexico’s Role In Solar Energy Production

As electric vehicles (EVs) and solar energy solutions are being more focused upon in the United Sates (U.S.), Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham and Ebon Solar LLC have jointly announced plans for a $942 million solar cell manufacturing plant in Albuquerque, marking another step in establishing New Mexico as a hub for advanced energy manufacturing.
According to the New Mexico Economic Development Department, Delaware-based Ebon Solar will construct an 834,000-square-foot plant in Albuquerque’s Mesa del Sol industrial development area. The project is projected to create over 900 new jobs, contributing substantially to the local economy.
“We have succeeded in making New Mexico a global center for advanced energy manufacturing,” Governor Lujan Grisham stated. “Ebon Solar joins other leading companies in embracing New Mexico’s commitment to renewable energy, its talented, dedicated workforce, and the opportunities we provide for job training and tuition-free college.”
Judy Cai, CEO of Ebon Solar, cited New Mexico’s abundant solar resources, favorable renewable energy policies, and skilled workforce as key factors in choosing Albuquerque for their investment. The company aims to develop beginning-to-end advanced manufacturing of solar cells, addressing a critical early upstream stage of the solar panel supply chain.
Interestingly, New Mexico is part of Maxeon Solar Technologies’ plans, revealed in August 2023, to build a $1 billion solar cell and panel factory in the state. This is set to be the largest in the US. Maxeon intends to break ground in the second half of 2024.
Moreover, the Albuquerque Regional Economic Alliance (AREA) played a crucial role in facilitating Ebon Solar’s decision. Don Tarry, president and CEO of PNM and the 2024 AREA Board Chair, expressed enthusiasm about the project, noting its alignment with PNM’s sustainability goals.
While Ebon Solar has not yet provided a specific timeline for the plant’s launch, this investment solidifies New Mexico’s position as an emerging leader in solar cell manufacturing.
As the U.S. is projected to reach 10 million solar installations by 2030 and 15 million by 2034, the project not only represents a significant economic opportunity but also aligns with the state’s commitment to renewable energy and sustainable development.
With this new project in progress, New Mexico’s commitment to solar energy solutions will bolster and continue to attract substantial investments in the solar industry for the nation.
