Chevrolet could revive the Joy nameplate for its next entry-level electric vehicle in international markets.

General Motors is considering the Wuling Bingo Pro as the basis for the affordable EV, and Chevrolet’s international marketing team is evaluating the Joy name as a potential option for the production model.

Chevrolet considers a familiar name for new EV

General Motors is expanding Chevrolet’s electrified vehicle portfolio in international markets as the brand faces increasing competition from Chinese automakers. The company has already revived the Spark and Captiva nameplates for zero-emissions crossovers and is now evaluating another familiar badge for a smaller EV, according to GM Authority.

GM is considering the all-electric Wuling Bingo Pro as Chevrolet’s next entry-level EV in select emerging markets. The evaluation has progressed to the point where Chevrolet’s international marketing team is considering potential names for the model, including Joy.

The Joy name has previously been used by Chevrolet in several markets. GM retains the legal rights to the name across South America, while the badge also has strong recognition in Mexico.

The name is also associated with entry-level subcompact vehicles in several markets, potentially making it easier for Chevrolet to communicate the new EV’s position within its lineup.

Joy could return with an electric powertrain

The potential revival would build on the nameplate’s history in international markets. Chevrolet previously used the Joy badge in South America for a version of the first-generation Onix, while the name has a history stretching back more than three decades in markets such as Mexico.

The new model would instead be an all-electric vehicle based on the Wuling Bingo Pro. GM is evaluating the vehicle for key emerging markets where Chevrolet is looking to enter the affordable zero-emissions segment.

The Joy name has not been finalized, however. Chevrolet’s international marketing team is still evaluating the badge alongside other options.

GM is expected to reveal the name of its Chevrolet EV based on the Wuling Bingo Pro at a later date.
