Mercedes-Benz is gearing up to take on Tesla’s market dominance with the launch of two new electric vehicles (EVs): an all-electric CLA sedan and a companion crossover. These models are set to compete with Tesla’s best-selling Model 3 and Model Y, respectively.

The electric CLA sedan is aimed to arrive in the United States (U.S.) market late next year, marking the start of Mercedes-Benz’s new generation of more affordable EVs according to Automotive News. Based on the company’s MMA (Mercedes Modular Architecture) platform, the electric CLA comes with an energy consumption of around 5.2 miles per kWh.

Moreover, the concept version, unveiled last September, delivers an estimated range of up to 750 km (466 miles) and fast-charging capabilities that can add around 400 km (248 miles) of range in just 15 minutes. Following the CLA sedan, Mercedes plans to introduce an electric crossover variant in early 2026. This model, reportedly code-named X174, is projected to start production in Germany in October 2025.

The new EVs will be part of a four-vehicle lineup based on the MMA platform, including a coupe, a wagon, and two crossovers. As a result, this strategy aligns with Mercedes’ goal to offer more affordable and sporty options in the growing compact EV market.

Tesla’s Performance In U.S. EV Market

As for Tesla, its Model 3 and Model Y have been a stronghold for the company in its EV lineup. Notably, the Model 3 and Model Y accounted for the majority of deliveries at 422,405 units for Tesla’s Q2 2024. Yet, the company fell short on earnings per share at $0.52.

As Tesla faces declining sales and market share, Mercedes-Benz sees an opportunity to capitalize on its established brand reputation and EV technology to win over the market. Also, production of these new models is projected to be spread across plants in Rastatt, Germany; Kecskemet, Hungary; and Beijing, China.

As the EV market expects Mercedes-Benz’s upcoming offerings, Tesla’s dominance will be challenged while potential buyers will receive more choices in the premium EV selections.
