Illinois Governor JB Pritzker joined Rivian executives and local officials in Normal to mark the production milestone and emphasize the state’s growing role in electric vehicle manufacturing.

Rivian highlighted the rollout of its first R2 vehicle from its Normal, Illinois manufacturing plant as the company prepares for a major expansion of production capacity tied to the upcoming midsize SUV.
Illinois Governor JB Pritzker joined Rivian executives and local officials in Normal to mark the production milestone and emphasize the state’s growing role in electric vehicle manufacturing.
The R2 is expected to become a central part of Rivian’s future production strategy. The company said the Normal facility will eventually be capable of producing up to 155,000 R2 vehicles annually, according to Wand News.
Pritzker said the achievement reflects long-term investments in infrastructure, workforce development, and advanced manufacturing.
“Illinois is proving when you invest in people, infrastructure, and innovation, companies choose to grow here,” he said.
Rivian previously announced a $1.5 billion investment in 2024 to support R2 production in Normal and create more than 550 full-time jobs.
In 2025, Rivian also announced a $120 million supplier park located across from the manufacturing facility. The project is expected to create nearly 100 direct jobs, with additional employment expected as the supplier network grows.
The Illinois Department of Transportation provided an $11.5 million grant to construct a tunnel beneath U.S. Route 150 connecting the factory and supplier park. Officials said the project is intended to improve safety, reduce traffic disruption, and strengthen supply chain efficiency.
Suppliers tied to the project include Adient and OPmobility.
Illinois is also investing in workforce development connected to EV manufacturing. The Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity awarded Heartland Community College a $5 million grant to support EV career training programs.
The initiative has already engaged around 140 participants through apprenticeships, manufacturing training, certifications, and dual credit opportunities. Heartland Community College is also helping develop an EV manufacturing training academy, with future plans for an onsite academy at Rivian’s Normal plant.
