With 2,781 EVs Delivered, Lucid Surpasses Forecasts While Grappling With A Production Decline

Lucid Motors has reported mixed results for Q3 2024, showcasing both promising growth in electric vehicle (EV) deliveries and unexpected challenges in production.
According to Lucid, the company has set a new delivery record for the third consecutive quarter, handing over 2,781 units to customers in Q3 2024. This performance surpassed analyst expectations of 2,242 deliveries, according to a poll by Visible Alpha as cited by Reuters. The strong delivery numbers have pushed Lucid’s year-to-date total to 7,142 units, already surpassing the 6,001 deliveries made in all of 2023.

Lucid’s delivery success can be attributed, in part, to significant price cuts and incentives. The company is offering up to $17,500 in savings on the 2024 Air Grand Touring model, while the 2024 Lucid Air Pure can now be leased for under $550 a month, a substantial reduction from last year’s $749 lease offer. These aggressive pricing strategies align with broader industry trends, as EV automakers grapple with softening demand amid high interest rates and increased competition from hybrid vehicles.
Despite the surge in deliveries, Lucid’s production numbers have raised concerns. The company produced 1,805 units in Q3, a decrease from the 2,110 units produced in Q2. This figure fell short of analysts’ projections of 2,267 units for the quarter. The production slowdown puts pressure on Lucid to ramp up manufacturing in Q4 if it aims to meet its annual production target of 9,000 units for 2024.
Lucid ended Q2 with $4.28 billion in liquidity, bolstered by a $1.5 billion commitment from Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF). This financial cushion is expected to fund operations through Q4 2025. The company is set to release its Q3 financial results on November 7, 2024, which will provide more insight into the impact of its pricing strategy on its bottom line.

Lucid is pinning its hopes on the upcoming Gravity SUV, aimed to begin production later this year. The company has also teased a midsize electric SUV starting under $50,000, aimed at competing with Tesla’s best-selling Model Y. This new model is part of Lucid’s strategy to introduce at least three lower-priced EVs over the next few years, potentially broadening its market appeal.
As Lucid navigates these industry-wide challenges, its ability to maintain delivery growth while addressing production issues will be crucial. With the company’s upcoming financial results, the success of its new product launches will be closely watched by investors and industry analysts alike.
