Lucid has revealed significant developments for its upcoming Gravity electric vehicle (EV) model and future product lineup during its Technology & Manufacturing Day event.

CEO and CTO Peter Rawlinson claimed that the Lucid Gravity is “set to be the best SUV ever.” The Gravity, scheduled to start production later this year, will feature a NACS charging port compatibility in 2025, granting access to over 15,000 Tesla Superchargers.

With an expected starting price under $80,000 and seating for up to seven passengers, the Gravity aims to incorporate technologies and innovations from the Lucid Air, the company’s flagship sedan.

Next-Gen Atlas Drive Unit

Moreover, Lucid introduced its next-generation drive unit, dubbed “Atlas,” which is currently under development and testing. This new technology promises enhanced value for both Lucid and its owners, with improved power density and efficiency compared to current industry standards. The smaller size of the Atlas unit allows for more interior space, whileintegration with Lucid’s proprietary software stack enables advanced powertrain controls.

Midsize Platform and Future Models

Looking to the future, Lucid provided a glimpse into its product strategy, announcing plans for three new lower-cost electric models on a midsize platform. These include a midsize electric SUV to compete with the Tesla Model Y, a sedan rivaling the Tesla Model 3, and potentially an off-road focused EV. Production of the midsize crossover is scheduled for late 2026, with a starting price under $50,000 for the midsize models.

In terms of current performance, Lucid has already delivered more EVs in 2024 (through August 31) than in all of 2023. The company also reported that the first Gravity prototypes rolled off the production line at Lucid’s Arizona plant in July, marking a significant milestone in the SUV’s development.

Lucid’s Updates and Advancements

Lucid continues to advance its technology offerings, recently releasing the Lucid UX 2.4 over-the-air update. This update features an enhanced Dream Drive Pro Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS), a new voice control system, and an updated navigation map design, demonstrating the company’s commitment to continual improvement of its vehicles’ software capabilities.

Throughout the event, Lucid emphasized the cost-effectiveness of its technologies. The company presented an independent third-party analysis on manufacturing cost-effectiveness and claimed lower powertrain system costs compared to competitors. Lucid’s focus on efficiency allows for smaller batteries while maintaining competitive range, a strategy that Rawlinson believes will unlock “significant cost and mass savings as we scale.”

As Lucid continues to expand its product lineup and refine its technologies, the company aims to challenge established players in the EV industry, particularly in the lucrative midsize segment. With its innovative approach to EV design and manufacturing, Lucid is positioning itself as a formidable competitor in the EV market.
