Ford F-150 Lightning Cheaper to Insure Than Tesla Cybertruck, Study Finds

The Ford F-150 Lightning costs significantly less to insure than the Tesla Cybertruck, according to new data from Insurify. While EV insurance rates remain higher than the national average, the Lightning ranks as the most affordable electric pickup for full-coverage policies, undercutting the Cybertruck by a wide margin.

Cybertruck insurance remains far above average

Tesla’s Cybertruck carries an average annual full-coverage premium of $4,649, Insurify reported. That figure is more than double the national average for all vehicles, which stands at $2,310, and about 15% higher than the broader EV average of $4,043.

Insurify attributes the elevated rates to the Cybertruck’s stainless steel body, specialized components, and higher starting price, which increase repair and replacement costs. Limited parts availability and the smaller number of repair shops equipped to handle Tesla vehicles also play a role, according to Ford Authority.

Daniel Lucas, senior carrier partnerships manager at Insurify, noted that some insurers either decline coverage or set significantly higher premiums due to concerns over repair complexity and costs.

Lightning emerges as the better insurance value

By comparison, the Ford F-150 Lightning averages $2,778 per year for full coverage, making it the least expensive electric pickup to insure in Insurify’s latest analysis.

Ford Motor Company’s electric truck benefits from broader repair networks and more traditional construction methods, which can help keep claim costs lower. The Lightning’s insurance rate also compares more favorably with the national vehicle average, even as overall EV premiums remain elevated industry-wide. The findings echo previous research from Mercury Insurance, which also ranked the Lightning among the more affordable EVs to insure.

With insurance premiums rising across the U.S., total cost of ownership is becoming a larger factor in EV purchasing decisions. For buyers comparing electric pickups, insurance costs may tilt the math in favor of Ford’s Lightning over Tesla’s Cybertruck.
