Ford’s upcoming Fathom midsize electric pickup is being positioned as an affordable EV truck, with even its highest trim reportedly expected to stay below $40,000.

The Fathom will be the first vehicle on Ford’s Universal Electric Vehicle platform, with a starting MSRP of $28,350, or $29,945 including the $1,595 destination fee, and a planned late-2027 launch.

Ford reportedly targets a sub-$40,000 price for the Fathom’s highest trim

Andrew Frick, president of Ford’s Model e division, reportedly told the Detroit Free Press that even the top trim will remain below $40,000. Ford has not yet announced pricing for the different versions or detailed what equipment will distinguish them.

After driving a Fathom prototype last month, Ford CEO Jim Farley was reportedly blown away by the small truck’s handling and performance, calling it a “breakthrough product”, according to Car and Driver.

Farley also said the Fathom is on track to hit the market toward the end of 2027, though the team will need to keep developing at a rapid pace to get it out on time and within budget.

That under-$40,000 ceiling for the top trim remains a reported target rather than confirmed pricing. Ford has not said what separates base and higher specs, though longer range is among the upgrades expected up the lineup.

The UEV platform uses a 400-volt architecture to keep costs down

The UEV platform runs on a 400-volt electrical architecture, so charging will not be as quick as on 800-volt vehicles, but Ford says the trade-off for a lighter, more affordable truck is worth it.

The platform also swaps the usual 12-volt electrical system for a 48-volt setup meant to raise power and fuel efficiency. Farley said electrical components will be split into five zones to simplify production and cut costs.

The Fathom is already confirmed to include a touchscreen, built-in Apple Maps, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Blue Cruise hands-free driving.

Preorders are expected to open in the first quarter of 2027, with the truck slated to go on sale in the last quarter of the year.
