Volkswagen has reportedly put development of its next-generation electric ID. Golf on hold for now, saying it needs to secure the investment before work can continue.

The move adds fresh uncertainty to an EV that was first planned for 2028 and has already been pushed back to the end of the decade.

Volkswagen freezes ID. Golf development as financial pressure mounts

Brand CEO Thomas Schäfer reportedly first disclosed the pause in an internal interview, according to Handelsblatt, and Volkswagen later confirmed it in its nine-month results statement for the Brand Group Core. The company said the work is paused “until we can securely allocate the necessary investments.”

“We simply cannot afford this work right now,” Schäfer reportedly said, according to Reuters. Volkswagen calls the measure temporary and wants to restart development as soon as possible, but it has not said when, according to newmobility.news.

The pause follows a Volkswagen Group net loss of around €5.8 billion for the third quarter of 2026, which the company blamed on a multibillion-euro Porsche write-down, weak business in China and restructuring costs.

It is part of a wider savings push to tighten investment, cut upfront spending and improve working capital. Net cash flow in the Brand Group Core dropped to €1.43 billion in the first nine months from €4.34 billion, while revenue held nearly steady at €106.4 billion and operating profit slipped to €4.33 billion from €4.72 billion. Operating return on sales eased to 4.1% from 4.4%.

The Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand is under the most strain. Its operating profit fell to €813 million from €1.48 billion, for a 1.3% operating return on sales. Volkswagen said that would have been 2.6% without special items such as restructuring, the planned sale of its Osnabrück plant and the end of ID.4 production in Chattanooga.

Electric Golf timeline remains uncertain as Volkswagen prepares its next platform

The ID. Golf is set to ride on the group’s new Scalable Systems Platform, or SSP, which Volkswagen is developing with Rivian and which is meant to cut technical complexity and costs. Earlier this year, Schäfer confirmed the model had been delayed from 2028 to the end of the decade.

Whether the new pause pushes that date back further is unclear. The Volkswagen Works Council told Reuters it could make up any lost time, though employee representatives see the spending freeze as another sign of the group’s financial strain.

In the meantime, Volkswagen is leaning on its current EVs, including the recently facelifted ID.3 Neo and the lower-priced ID. Polo and ID. Cross. “We have a fantastic lineup now that we do not need an electric Golf in 2028. We are well set with what we have in our portfolio with our vehicles,” Schäfer said earlier this year.

Wolfsburg remains the planned home of the electric Golf late in the decade. The combustion Golf, meanwhile, is slated to shift its production to Mexico in 2027.
