Rivian’s software and services unit posted $256 million in third-quarter gross profit at a 42% margin, while the EV maker’s automotive business lost $80 million.

Rivian is leaning harder on AI and autonomy to grow that software business, with Autonomy+ and an upcoming Point to Point feature aimed at turning driver assistance into recurring revenue.

Autonomy+ and Point to Point aim to grow Rivian’s software revenue

Software and services revenue rose 45% to $605 million, about 28% of Rivian’s $2.155 billion total, driven by electrical-architecture and software-development work, repair and maintenance, and Autonomy+ subscriptions.

Autonomy+ is available on every R2 and on R1 models from the 2025 model year, offering hands-free driving on millions of miles of roads, according to Automotive World.

Next is Point to Point, which lets drivers enter an address so the car can handle the full route under supervision, including city streets, junctions and highways. A limited invitation-only early-access rollout begins later this year, with a general release to Autonomy+ subscribers in 2027.

An October over-the-air update also brought Gmail integration into Rivian Assistant.

Volkswagen JV still supplies most of the software profit

Of that software and services revenue, $354 million, or 59%, came from Rivian’s joint venture with Volkswagen Group. Today’s software profits mainly reflect engineering work for Volkswagen, whose brands will use Rivian’s zonal architecture from 2027, rather than software sold directly to drivers.

R&D spending rose to $485 million from $453 million, driven by AI and autonomy software and partly offset by lower engineering and design costs. Rivian bought Third Dimension AI to bolster closed-loop simulation and plans to say more at its Autonomy and AI Day on December 9.

“We are laying the foundations for a future that we believe will be fully electric, autonomous and AI defined,” said RJ Scaringe, founder and chief executive of Rivian.

Autonomy+ is what could make the business recurring and less dependent on one partner. Point to Point’s 2027 general release will show whether drivers will pay for it at scale.
