The New TXU Free EV Miles Program Provides Ford EV Owners With 18 Hours Of Daily Cost-Free Home Charging

Ford and TXU Energy, Texas’ leading retail electric provider, have announced a new partnership that offers Ford electric vehicle (EV) owners in Texas the opportunity to charge their EVs at home for free.
According to Ford, the program named TXU Free EV Miles is the first of its kind in the state and aims to reduce the cost of EV ownership while promoting grid stability. Under this program, Ford EV buyers will receive credits on their TXU Energy bill for all home energy used to charge their EVs during specified hours.
Moreover, the free charging window runs from 7 p.m. to 1 p.m. the following day, providing an 18-hour daily window for cost-free charging. This generous timeframe covers around 80% of typical EV charging, which occurs at home.
Furthermore, if charging is required outside the free window, EV customers will pay a simple and fixed rate, the same as their regular home energy rate. The program is available to owners of Ford F-150 Lightning, Mustang Mach-E, and Escape Plug-in Hybrid EVs. As an added incentive, enrolled customers will receive a $100 welcome bonus from Ford and a $250 bonus from TXU Energy after one year of participation.
Bill Crider, Ford’s senior director of global charging and energy services, expressed the program’s benefits stating, “Encouraging our electric vehicle customers to charge at off-peak hours through programs like Free EV Miles helps to save them money while supporting a more sustainable, resilient electrical grid.”
Notably, the program is designed to educate Texans about the advantages of EVs while incentivizing charging during low-demand hours. Ford EV owners can easily schedule their charging times using the FordPass app or their EV’s touchscreen, ensuring they take full advantage of the free charging hours.
Sam Sen, vice president of energy transition solutions for TXU Energy, expressed the initiative to educate Texans stating, “This partnership with Ford fits squarely into TXU Energy’s broader strategy of educating customers on the benefits of owning an EV, removing barriers to making the switch, and increasing grid resiliency.”
As Texas emerges as the third-largest state for EV sales in 2023, both companies view this program as a potential model for future energy-saving opportunities and may explore expanding it to other states based on its success in Texas.
As a result of this innovative approach to EV charging, not only promises significant savings for Ford EV owners but also contributes to a more stable and efficient power grid. By encouraging off-peak charging, the program helps balance energy demand and supports the integration of electric energy sources. The TXU Free EV Miles program is now open for enrolment.
