During Tesla’s unforeseen decision to downsize its Supercharger team, BP is seizing the opportunity to expand its electric vehicle (EV) charging network in the United States (U.S.). The company expansion plans are intended to fill the void left by Tesla’s restructuring efforts.

BP has shown a sharp interest in strengthening its charging network across the U.S., especially in regions including the northeast, the Sun Belt, the west coast, and the Great Lakes area according to Reuters. This move came soon after Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s massive layoff of the company’s Supercharger Team, a move that raised eyebrows in the industry.

To leverage Tesla’s situation to bolster its capacities, BP is eyeing Tesla’s Supercharger sites as potential acquisitions, where Tesla has already canceled four planned Supercharger sites in New York. In addition, BP aims to hire former Tesla employees, leveraging their skills to drive its expansion efforts forward. BP has stated that it “is aggressively looking to acquire real estate to scale our network, which is a heightened focus following the recent Tesla announcement,” according to Bloomberg.

BP’s expansion plans align with its goal of deploying over 100,000 charging stations globally by 2030, with a focus on investing $1 billion in the U.S. EV charging infrastructure. As part of this strategy, BP made an agreement with Tesla in October 2023, securing $100 million worth of Supercharger hardware for deployment starting later this year and extending into early 2025.

Furthermore, BP’s strategy includes the development of large-scale hubs, Gigahubs, featuring 12 or more chargers to meet the increasing demand for fast-charging infrastructure.

Tesla’s Superchargers Expansion Plans

As for Tesla, Musk’s decision to scale back Tesla’s Supercharger network expansion has presented a prime opportunity for competitors like BP to gain traction in the EV market for charging stations. With Tesla’s pivot, other public EV fast-charging companies will also likely leverage the situation.

Despite this, Musk has stated that Tesla will spend $500 million on its Supercharging network. From a post on his X account, Musk stated, “Just to reiterate: Tesla will spend well over $500M expanding our Supercharger network to create thousands of NEW chargers this yea.” As a result, it appears that Tesla will still be competitive in the U.S. charging network regarding expansion.

As Tesla still possess dominance regarding EV fast-charging networks in the U.S. EV industry, BP’s strategic maneuvers along with other rivals are eager to fill the void come on top over during Tesla’s restructuring plans. BP sights on massive expansion will heat up the competitive space with the company making the first big move to shake up the U.S. EV charging landscape.
