Australian electric vehicle (EV) solutions company eLumina is set to open the country’s first plant for manufacturing EV chargers and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). The 20 million AUD (around $13.5 million) plant, located in Yatala, Gold Coast, Queensland, is nearing completion.

In detail, the plant will arrive with an annual production capacity of 300 units entailing both EV chargers and community lithium-ion batteries. eLumina’s flagship product, the D1 all-in-one ultra-fast charger, will be a major focus of the production efforts. It is designed for rural areas, featuring a 193 kWh LFP battery and can charge two EVs simultaneously with up to 160 kW of power.

Lisa Marsh, co-founder and CEO of eLumina, expressed the importance of this development stating, “Global demand for batteries is soaring. We have record solar uptake and energy generation in Australia, but we need battery storage at scale to harness its full potential.”

Moreover, Marsh added that the plant would produce 300 high-skilled jobs, drawing on local talent and using locally sourced materials. In terms of future plans, the company is aiming for a plant three times larger by 2027.

Australia’s EV Industry

In terms of Australia’s EV industry, this expansion aligns with the growing demand for EV infrastructure in Australia, where the current ratio of EV chargers to EVs by 1 to 35 lags behind other countries according to Marsh.

To accelerate the deployment of its EV chargers, eLumina has partnered with Addelec. Chris McPherson, general manager of Addelec, noted, “The eLumina D1 with built-in battery storage is a great option to have, especially considering the power challenges we have across Australia.”

The establishment of this plant will position Australia’s journey towards energy independence and electric mobility with eLumina’s locally produced EV chargers and BESS to build the necessary infrastructure for the country. eLumina’s plant is projected to start operations in August 2024.
