As autonomous driving has been noted in the realm of the electric vehicles (EVs) industry, Zoox, the self-driving vehicle division of Amazon, is readily expanding its street testing operations of its robotaxis to Austin, Texas, and Miami, Florida. This marks the first trial sites outside the western United States (U.S.).

With Zoox announcing plans to deploy its test fleet to the aforementioned locations, the company’s retrofitted Toyota Highlanders are equipped with human safety drivers in select areas near business and entertainment districts in the cities according to Reuters.

Currently, Zoox has been testing its autonomous vehicles in California and Nevada. In terms of its expansion, the next steps to Austin and Miami mark a notable geographic diversification of its trial sites. Despite the expansion, Zoox has clarified that it does not intend to deploy its robotaxi fleet in Austin or Miami immediately. Instead, the company will still be focusing on introducing paid ride offerings in its primary target markets of Las Vegas and San Francisco according to Reuters.
It is important to note that Zoox has been a part of investigations from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) after crashes from its robotaxis. However, the company is not alone as others including Alphabet’s Waymo and General Motors’ Cruise have also been involved with crash accidents from its autonomous vehicles, which have also been investigated by the NHTSA.
Nevertheless, Zoox’s expansion of its testing operations will contribute to and elevate its robotaxi capabilities to prevent and avoid potential accidents in any scenario and in any road condition. As Zoox launches its expansion into Austin and Miami, the company will navigate through the evolving autonomous vehicle landscape while advancing the safety and reliability of autonomous mobility solutions.
