Rivian recorded a 33% year-over-year increase in U.S. electric vehicle registrations in August, standing out in a month when registrations across the U.S. battery-electric market fell 36%.

The company ranked second behind Tesla, with its electric vans helping offset a steep decline in R1S registrations.

Rivian climbed to No. 2 as the U.S. EV market declined

According to The Motley Fool, vehicle registration data offers investors a way to track automaker sales trends, although the figures can lag other sales data by about a month. The August figures cover full battery-electric vehicles, excluding hybrids, and reflect a market still being compared with purchases made ahead of the September 30, 2025, expiration of the $7,500 federal EV tax credit.

Rivian moved from No. 10 in U.S. EV registrations a year earlier to No. 2 in August. It recorded 4,995 registrations, compared with Tesla’s 48,083. Tesla’s registrations fell 14% year over year, but its share of the EV market increased to 54.5% as the overall market contracted.

Rivian’s R2 contributed 1,554 registrations in August after launching in June. The company was still in the early stages of increasing R2 production during the month and added a second production shift late in the third quarter. The article notes that the impact of that additional shift would not be fully reflected until October registration data was collected and released. A third shift is planned for next year.

Electric vans helped lift Rivian’s overall registrations

The R2 was not the only contributor to Rivian’s gains. Registrations for the electric vans Rivian largely produces for Amazon increased 87% year over year to 2,165 vehicles in August.

That increase helped lift the company’s total U.S. registrations even as the R1S recorded a 53% decline. The Motley Fool attributed the R1S drop to the model aging and more affordable competition entering the market.

Rivian’s August results came alongside Toyota and Subaru, which also stood out in the registration data. The article linked the stronger performances among these automakers to the introduction of new models.

For Rivian, the figures offer an early look at performance during the R2 production ramp, while the electric vans provide another contributor to its registration growth. The article also points to pressure on Rivian to expand its mainstream lineup ahead of the R3 launch as automakers compete to lower EV costs and bring new models to market more quickly.
