Land Rover has opened orders for the 2027 Range Rover Electric, bringing an all-electric powertrain to its flagship SUV for the first time as the model takes aim at luxury electric SUVs such as the Cadillac Escalade IQ. Pricing starts at $138,000 in the U.S.

The Range Rover Electric uses a pair of permanent-magnet electric motors, with each motor rated at 260 kilowatts. Combined output reaches 542 horsepower and 627 pound-feet of torque.

Land Rover says the SUV can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in as little as 4.3 seconds. It can also accelerate from 50 to 75 mph in 2.7 seconds, giving the large luxury SUV substantial passing performance.

Despite the switch to electric power, Land Rover has retained the Range Rover’s focus on off-road capability.

333 miles of range and 350-kW charging

The Range Rover Electric is equipped with a 118.5-kWh usable battery pack and has an EPA-estimated range of up to 333 miles.

Its 800-volt electrical architecture supports DC fast charging at up to 350 kilowatts. Land Rover estimates that charging from 10% to 80% takes about 22 minutes under suitable conditions, according to GM Authority.

The automaker also says the SUV can recover as much as 125 miles of EPA-estimated range in 10 minutes when optimal charging conditions are available.

The charging capability puts the Range Rover Electric among the faster-charging large luxury EVs, while its 333-mile range gives it enough capacity for longer-distance driving without requiring frequent charging stops.

Range Rover capability remains intact

Land Rover has designed the electric model to preserve the off-road characteristics associated with the Range Rover name.

Its Integrated Traction Management system can adjust motor speed within 50 milliseconds, while Intelligent Driveline Dynamics can vary torque distribution between the front and rear axles from zero to 100%.

The Range Rover Electric can wade through up to 35 inches of water and tackle slopes of up to 45 degrees.

“The defining characteristic of Range Rover Electric is its ability to perform across every surface, with effortless comfort and refinement,” said Matt Becker, JLR vehicle engineering director.

Land Rover subjected the vehicle to more than 900,000 miles of physical and virtual testing during development. The testing included extreme-temperature conditions in Sweden and the United Arab Emirates.

The company said it has filed more than 300 patent applications associated with the electric SUV.

Built alongside combustion Range Rovers

The Range Rover Electric is based on the same fundamental architecture used by the brand’s combustion-engine, mild-hybrid and plug-in-hybrid models.

Production takes place at JLR’s Solihull facility in the United Kingdom. The company has trained thousands of employees at the plant in electrification as it prepares to build the electric Range Rover alongside its other vehicles.

In North America, the Range Rover Electric supports the North American Charging Standard and can access the Tesla Supercharger network.

Customers can choose between short- and long-wheelbase configurations depending on the market. Available specifications include SE, Autobiography, SV, SV Black, SV Ultra and First Edition versions.

A new electric flagship

The Range Rover Electric enters an increasingly competitive segment of large, high-priced electric SUVs. The Cadillac Escalade IQ is one of its most direct rivals, while other luxury automakers are also expanding their electric SUV lineups.

Land Rover’s approach is differentiated by retaining the Range Rover’s traditional combination of luxury and off-road capability rather than developing the electric model solely around on-road performance.

With orders now open and a starting price of $138,000, the Range Rover Electric represents a significant expansion of Land Rover’s EV lineup and gives buyers a battery-powered alternative to the brand’s established flagship SUV.
