XPeng Motors has officially unveiled its latest electric vehicle (EV), the P7+ sedan, hailing it as the “world’s first AI car.” This new model, set to begin deliveries in November, marks a significant shift in XPeng’s approach to autonomous driving technology.
According to XPeng, the P7+ is a departure from XPeng’s previous models, most notably in its autonomous driving technology. Unlike its predecessors, the P7+ eschews LiDAR sensors in favor of a pure vision camera system, similar to Tesla’s approach. XPeng calls this new system “Eagle Eye,” containing that it can collect visual information more accurately and clearly than traditional cameras, covering an area as large as 1.8 football fields.
The XPeng P7+ comes with a host of advanced features, particularly in its AI and vision systems. It arrives with “door-to-door” and “parking space-to-parking space” intelligent driving capabilities, all powered by two Nvidia Orin X chips. At launch, the EV will include the XNGP (XPeng Navigation Guided Pilot) assisted driving feature, which is integral to the vehicle’s advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS). AI is integrated across multiple core systems, including power usage, energy control, and thermal management, ensuring optimized performance and efficiency.
In terms of specifications, the P7+ is a mid-to-large electric sedan, measuring 5,056 mm in length, 1,937 mm in width, and 1,512 mm in height, with a 3,000 mm wheelbase. It offers two LFP (lithium iron phosphate) battery pack options: a 60.7 kWh capacity providing a 620 km (385 miles) CLTC range, and a 76.3 kWh capacity offering a 710 km (441 miles) CLTC range.
With a drag coefficient of Cd 0.206 and energy consumption as low as 11.6 kWh per 100 km (62 miles), the P7+ demonstrates remarkable efficiency. Customers can choose between two powertrain options: an entry-level 180 kW (241 hp) version and a high-performance 230 kW (308 hp) model.
For the interior, the P7+ is equipped with a 15.6-inch main screen, powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8295P chip, and a two-spoke steering wheel with a gear shifter mounted behind. The second-row seats offer luxury features like electric adjustments, ventilation, and massage functions, along with an 8-inch screen for rear passengers.
Moreover, the P7+ offers a folding table for the right rear passenger and a spacious trunk with a 4/6 folding ratio provideadded convenience. With a total cargo space of 2,221 liters, the P7+ is claimed to have the largest storage capacity in its class for vehicles priced under RMB 300,000.
As for market availability, XPeng has announced that pre-sales for the P7+ will begin on October 14, 2024, at the Paris Auto Show, with the official launch and initial deliveries set for early November 2024 in China. While official pricing has yet to be confirmed, XPeng has suggested a price point around RMB 300,000 (around $42,450).
The unveiling of the P7+ represents a significant moment in the EV industry, particularly in the realm of autonomous driving technology. By adopting a vision-only approach to self-driving capabilities, XPeng is directly challenging established players like Tesla and potentially setting a new standard for AI integration in EVs.
As the “world’s first AI car,” the P7+ could mark a turning point in how automakers approach vehicle intelligence and autonomous features. Its success or failure in the market could have far-reaching implications for the future direction of EV and autonomous vehicle development.
With its exceptional range, advanced AI features, and spacious interior, the XPeng P7+ is poised to make a significant impact in the competitive electric sedan market. As November approaches, all eyes will be on XPeng to see if the P7+ lives up to its ambitious claims and truly delivers on the promise of an AI-driven automotive future.
