Aside from its electric vehicle (EV) venture, Xpeng has revealed its plans to enter the Robotaxi market by aiming to launch self-driving taxis by 2026. This announcement, made by CEO He Xiaopeng, positions the company as a new player in the evolving autonomous vehicle industry.

Unlike competitors such as Tesla, which plans to produce and operate robotaxis, Xpeng intends to focus solely on developing and manufacturing the vehicles. The company plans to partner with ride-hailing providers, potentially including Didi, with whom Xpeng has already collaborated on the M03 sedan.

Xpeng’s approach to autonomous driving technology appears to be shifting. While the company was previously known for incorporating LiDAR sensors in its vehicles, recent reports suggest a move towards a purely vision-based system for its upcoming models, including the M03 and P7+ according to CarNewsChina.

He Xiaopeng expressed the company’s new strategic move on LinkedIn stating, “XPENG Motors’s Robotaxi will follow a set pace and launch a highly competitive Robotaxi in 2026. Moreover, we will not get involved in operations, but will work with our beloved partners to drive this revolution.”

The CEO also highlighted the differences between Xpeng’s end-to-end AI approach and that of other companies, suggesting that while end-to-end solutions may be suitable for Level 2 or 3 autonomous driving, they may not be optimal for Level 4. Nevertheless, He believes that end-to-end technology coupled with large model data will eventually achieve Level 4 autonomy.

Rising Competition Of Robotaxis

There has been an increasing competition in the Robotaxi space, Tesla recently confirmed an unveiling event for its Robotaxi, while Rimac unveiled its 2026 Robotaxi, Verne. Meanwhile, Baidu currently operates the largest Robotaxi fleet in China and has strongly reduced costs with its latest RT6 model.

As the race for autonomous taxi services intensifies, Xpeng’s entry promises to bring further innovation and competition to the market. With the success of these ventures depending on overcoming technological hurdles, more Robotaxis will be seen on the roads.
