Xpeng Motors has taken another major step in its European expansion strategy by launching operations in Spain and Portugal, marking the company’s latest push of its electric vehicle (EV) lineup into the competitive European automotive market.

Market Entry and Partnership

According to Xpeng, the company’s entry into the Iberian Peninsula comes through a strategic partnership with the Salvador Caetano Group, the largest automotive dealership group in the region. This collaboration aims to quickly establish a robust sales and after-sales network across both countries.

In Spain, Xpeng has already set up 10 dealerships in major cities including Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, and Málaga. The launch event in Madrid saw an impressive 650 reservations for test drives on the first day, indicating strong initial interest in the brand.

Portugal’s rollout begins with two points of sale in Lisbon and Porto, with ambitious plans to expand to seven dealerships by the end of 2024 and 15 by the end of 2025.

Xpeng is entering these markets with three electric models including the G6 ultra-smart coupe SUV, the G9 flagship intelligent SUV, and the P7 sports sedan.

All three models arrive with modern designs and advanced technology, including Xpeng’s SEPA 2.0 architecture and the Tianji XOS 5.2 smart cabin system. Notably, each EV has received a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating, underscoring their commitment to high safety standards.

Moreover, Xpeng also showcased its vision for future mobility with the X2 flying EV. This concept vehicle highlights the company’s ambitions beyond traditional ground transportation and its commitment to shaping the future of mobility in Europe.

European Expansion Strategy

Xpeng’s entry into Spain and Portugal is part of a broader European expansion that began four years ago in Norway. The company has since entered several European markets, including Germany in May 2024 and France earlier this year.

Brian Gu, Vice Chairman and President of Xpeng, expressed the company’s commitment to the European market stating, “We are deeply committed to the European market, which is undergoing a transformation in electric and smart mobility, and we are excited about our ongoing efforts to expand our presence in the region.”

Spain, as the fourth-largest economy in the European Union, represents a crucial market for Chinese automakers looking to grow their overseas sales. Portugal’s vehicle market has also shown strong growth in recent years, making the Iberian Peninsula an attractive region for Xpeng’s expansion.

As Xpeng’s entry into new territories will likely intensify competition among EV automakers, the company’s focus on advanced EV technology, safety, and innovative design could elevate the established market dynamics and accelerate EV adoption in these regions.
