Set To Debut On March 5, 2025, The ES90 Redefines EVs With Advanced AI, Advanced Safety Features, And Continuous Over-The-Air Updates

Volvo is set to elevate the electric vehicle (EV) landscape with its upcoming ES90, an electric sedan that exemplifies the future of software-defined automobiles. Set to debut on March 5, 2025, the ES90 blends unprecedented computing power with advanced safety features and sustainable engineering.

In detail, the ES90’s stand-out innovation is its dual NVIDIA DRIVE AGX Orin computer configuration, delivering an astounding 508 trillion operations per second (TOPS). To put this processing capability in perspective, it dwarfs even the most advanced gaming consoles – the upcoming PlayStation 5 Pro’s 16.7 TOPS represents merely 3% of the ES90’s computing power. This eightfold improvement over previous models enables sophisticated AI-driven features and marks a new era in automotive computing.

Moreover, the ES90 is built on Volvo’s revolutionary Superset tech stack, a unified hardware and software platform that will underpin all future Volvo EVs. This architectural approach enables the ES90 to evolve continuously through over-the-air (OTA) updates, enhancing everything from battery efficiency to safety features. In a noteworthy devotion to customer satisfaction, Volvo has announced that existing EX90 owners will receive a free hardware upgrade to match the ES90’s advanced computing capabilities.

In addition, the ES90 features what the company calls “Safe Space Technology.” This comprehensive safety system utilizes an impressive array of sensors – including lidar, five radars, eight cameras, and twelve ultrasonic sensors – to create a protective sphere around the vehicle. The system is meaningful for its ability to detect and avoid obstacles even in challenging low-light conditions.
While maintaining design elements familiar to Volvo enthusiasts – with a profile reminiscent of the hybrid S90 sedan – the ES90 incorporates modern styling cues from its SUV sibling, the EX90, including distinctive upright tail lights. This blend of innovation and tradition reflects Volvo’s evolution while maintaining its core identity.
Anders Bell, Volvo’s Chief Engineering and Technology Officer, emphasizes the vehicle’s transformative nature stating, “The ES90 is one of the most technically advanced cars on the market today and is designed to be improved further with time. Built on our state-of-the-art Superset tech stack, the ES90 puts safety at the forefront.”
Notably, the upcoming launch of the ES90 arrives at a period of strong performance for Volvo, which recorded a core operating profit of SEK 27 billion and sales of 763,389 cars in 2024. The new model aligns with Volvo’s environmental goals, supporting their transition to becoming a fully electric carmaker and achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040.
Through its software-defined architecture and powerful computing platform, the ES90 aims to deliver an experience that becomes increasingly refined and capable throughout its lifetime, setting a new standard for what consumers can expect from their vehicles.
