Volvo has unveiled its first all-electric Cross Country model, transforming its compact EX30 SUV into a more capable off-road electric vehicle (EV). The Swedish automaker revealed the EX30 Cross Country during an intimate fireside gathering at a remote cabin in Sweden, partnering with renowned outdoor brand Fjällräven to emphasize its adventure-ready credentials.

A Rugged Take on the EX30

The new variant builds upon the success of the standard EX30, which has already emerged as Europe’s third most popular EV, trailing only the Tesla Model Y and Model 3. The Cross Country edition enhances the base model’s capabilities with increased ground clearance, measuring 7.7 inches compared to the standard model’s 7 inches, positioning it competitively against other electric off-roaders like the Subaru Solterra’s 8.3 inches.

Visually, the EX30 Cross Country distinguishes itself through thoughtful design elements that pay homage to its Scandinavian heritage. The front fascia features an embossed topographical map of Sweden’s Kebnekaise mountain range, with the Volvo badge strategically placed at the highest peak. The exterior carries a more rugged appearance with protective skid plates, unpainted plastic wheel arch extensions, and a blacked-out front shield and rear boot lid.

Performance and Efficiency

In terms of performance, the Cross Country variant inherits the EX30’s dual-motor all-wheel-drive system, generating an impressive 428 horsepower and 401 lb-ft of torque. The vehicle can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in 3.7 seconds, slightly slower than its standard counterpart. The 69 kWh battery pack delivers a WLTP-rated range of 265 miles, with fast-charging capabilities allowing a 10-80% charge in 26 minutes at rates up to 153 kilowatts.

Compact Sizing and Minimalist Interior

For the interior, Volvo has reimagined the interior storage solutions, replacing door-mounted speakers with larger storage compartments and relocating them to a dashboard-mounted soundbar. The cabin features a minimalist design centered around a 12.3-inch tablet-style infotainment system with Google built-in, ensuring seamless navigation even in remote areas.

The compact dimensions of the EX30 Cross Country – 167 inches in length, 72 inches in width, and 61 inches in height – make it comparable to the Chevrolet Bolt EV, though with significantly enhanced capabilities. Buyers can choose between standard 19-inch wheels or optional 18-inch wheels with all-terrain tires for improved off-road performance.

Expected Pricing and Availability

While official pricing will be announced closer to the launch date later this spring, industry experts anticipate the EX30 Cross Country to start between $48,000 and $50,000 in the U.S. market, positioning it slightly above the Ultra trim of the standard model, which begins at $46,600.

With the introduction of the EX30 Cross Country, this EV represents Volvo’s latest step in combining environmental consciousness with authentic outdoor capability, offering adventurous drivers a compact yet capable electric SUV that’s equally at home on city streets or mountain trails.
