In a major win for owners of Volvo and Polestar electric vehicles (EVs), the two Swedish automakers have announced that their EVs will soon be able to access the vast Tesla Supercharger network across the United States (U.S.) and Canada.

Adapter Cables and New Purchases

Starting in mid-November, current Volvo and Polestar EV owners will be able to order $230 adapter cables that allow them to plug into the over 17,800 Tesla Supercharger stations. For new buyers, Volvo says it will include the adapter for free with the purchase of a 2025 model year EX90, EX40 or EC40 models.

Industry-Wide Shift to NACS

Moreover, the strategic move arrives as the broader automotive landscape rallies around Tesla’s North American Charging Standard (NACS) as the new universal fast-charging plug. Ford, GM, Rivian and others have all recently announced plans to adopt NACS, either through adapters or by directly integrating the Tesla-developed connector into future electric models.

While initial adapter rollouts have faced some hiccups, like delayed shipments and quality issues, the ability for non-Tesla EVs to access the Supercharger network is seen as a major breakthrough. Tesla’s charging infrastructure has long been considered the gold standard, with its seamless integration, reliability, and widespread coverage.

Improved Navigation and Charging

Furthermore, both companies are also updating their in-car navigation systems to display real-time availability and payment options for all Tesla Supercharger stations, further streamlining the charging experience for their EV owners.

Embracing Standards in EV Charging

As the EV market continues to grow, the industry’s move towards a common fast-charging standard is an important step in improving charging accessibility and convenience for all drivers, regardless of which brand of EV they choose.
