Volkswagen has announced the integration of ChatGPT into its vehicle lineup including electric vehicles (EVs), revolutionizing its in-car voice assistance. This AI technology will be available in all new electric ID. family models.

Notably, Volkswagen is among the first high-volume automakers to bring ChatGPT to its EVs, collaborating with technology partner Cerence. The AI-powered assistant will work alongside Volkswagen’s existing IDA voice assistant, providing backup when IDA is unable to answer queries according to Volkswagen.

Furthermore, the ChatGPT integration will be designed to improve the user experience by allowing them to interact with their EVs using natural language. Moreover, ChatGPT’s functionality is made to work intuitively with the users by simply talking to the assistant without taking their eyes off the road.

Importantly, Volkswagen has also underlined that user privacy and data protection are vital. In detail, the system anonymizes queries before sending them to ChatGPT, and all questions and answers are deleted immediately after use. In addition, ChatGPT will not have access to any vehicle data according to Volkswagen.

With ChatGPT available in all new electric ID.family models, the AI technology is also currently available in five languages: English (U.S. and UK), Spanish, Czech, and German. Also, Volkswagen buyers with existing VW Connect or Connect Plus accounts can utilize the enhanced voice assistant without requiring additional access or apps.

Kai Grünitz, Member of the Volkswagen Brand Board of Management responsible for Development, expressed the new integration of the company’s vehicles with ChatGPT stating, “Volkswagen has a long tradition of democratizing technologies. By seamlessly integrating ChatGPT into the backend of our voice assistant, we are now offering drivers the opportunity to use this artificial intelligence on a daily basis.”

As EVs become increasingly complex in their technological features, automakers are turning to voice-based controls to help drivers navigate the various components of newer models. As a result, the introduction of ChatGPT to Volkswagen’s lineup reflects the broader trend of AI integration in the automotive landscape and this technology will shape the in-car experiences and driver interaction as it evolves.
