Toyota announced its latest electric vehicle (EV) SUV, the Urban Cruiser EV, set to make its public debut at the 2025 Brussels Motor Show in January. This compact electric crossover offers a versatile and technologically advanced alternative in the market.
Design and Dimensions
The new Urban Cruiser EV showcases a bold “Urban Tech” design language, featuring a distinctive “hammerhead” front-end that sets it apart from competitors. Slightly larger than the Yaris Cross, the SUV measures 4,285 mm in length, 1,800 mm in width, and 1,640 mm in height, with an extended wheelbase of 2,700 mm. The EV model will be available in various exterior colors, including bi-tone options with a contrasting black roof.
Powertrain and Performance
Toyota offers two battery pack options for its powertrain: a 49 kWh and a 61 kWh battery, both utilizing lithium iron phosphate technology. These battery choices cater to different performance needs, with varying powertrain configurations available.
The front-wheel-drive (FWD) version with the 49 kWh battery delivers 106 kW (144 horsepower), while the FWD model with the 61 kWh battery boosts power to 128 kW (174 hp). For those seeking more robust performance, the all-wheel-drive (AWD) variant with the 61 kWh battery produces 135 kW (184 horsepower).
The AWD version comes equipped with additional features like Downhill Assist Control and Trail Mode, enhancing its off-road capabilities. Meanwhile, the FWD model is designed with a Snow Mode, which improves traction on slippery surfaces, ensuring a safer and more controlled driving experience in various conditions.
Interior and Technology
The Urban Cruiser EV contains a spacious and flexible interior, highlighted by a sliding rear seat system that can be adjusted to create more passenger or cargo space. The dashboard features a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10.1-inch infotainment touchscreen with smartphone integration.
The standard safety features of the Urban Cruiser EV include a pre-collision system, adaptive cruise control, lane departure alert, lane keep assist, and a 360-degree camera system, all designed to enhance driver awareness and provide additional protection on the road.
Significance in Toyota’s Electrification Strategy
Toyota plans to launch the Urban Cruiser EV in the United Kingdom (UK) during Q3 2025, with expected prices around £35,000 (around $44,500). The vehicle is part of Toyota’s broader strategy to introduce 15 zero-emission vehicles by 2026, with six being battery EVs on dedicated platforms.
This launch marks an important milestone in Toyota’s multi-path electrification approach. The company aims to progressively lower emissions across Europe, with a goal of achieving 100% CO2 reduction by 2035 and full carbon neutrality by 2040.
