Thailand Has Seen Major Automakers Including BYD And BMW Investing Heavily In EV Production

Thailand is rapidly establishing itself as a global hub for electric vehicle (EV) production and battery manufacturing, attracting investments from major automakers worldwide.
According to the Thailand Board of Investments, Thailand with its incentives and location makes a great investment for further EV based strategic actions as key automakers including BYD, BMW, Great Wall Motor, and Hozon New Energy Automobile have made substantial commitments to EV production in Thailand.
BYD recently inaugurated a $900 million plant in Rayong, capable of producing 150,000 units annually. This plant marks BYD’s first production base outside of China and aims to serve both domestic and export markets including ASEAN countries, Australia, and Europe.

BMW is also intensifying its presence in Thailand, breaking ground on a €42 million ($46 million) high-voltage battery plant in Rayong. The company plans to launch locally manufactured EVs by the second half of 2025, building on its two-decade-long manufacturing presence in the country.
The Thai government’s supportive policies including tax breaks, subsidies, and other incentives, have played a crucial role in attracting these investments. The country’s “30@30” strategy aims for 30% of vehicles manufactured by 2030 to be electric, encompassing cars, trucks, and buses.
The Electric Vehicle Association of Thailand forecasts a doubling of EV sales in 2024, potentially reaching a 20% market share of all vehicles produced in the country. This growth is supported by the establishment of a local production plant and a developing supply chain including battery manufacturing.

Moreover, SVOLT Energy Technology, in partnership with Banpu Next, has begun producing EV battery packs in Thailand, further strengthening the localized supply chain. This development is crucial for Thailand’s ambition to become a major EV manufacturing hub for both domestic and export markets.
Eric Ruge, Managing Director of BMW Manufacturing (Thailand) Co. Ltd., noted the rapid development of the EV market in Thailand stating, “Customers are marching in the direction of battery electric vehicles.”
The surge in EV production and sales in Thailand is part of a broader global trend towards zero-emission vehicles. Bloomberg Green analysts have identified Thailand as one of the countries that has surpassed the 5% market share “tipping point” for mass EV adoption “in blazing fashion.”
As Thailand continues to attract investments and expand its EV manufacturing capabilities, the country is set to play a vital role in the global transition to EVs. With the country’s strategic location, government incentives, and established automotive industry infrastructure, it has positioned itself at the forefront of the EV transition in Southeast Asia.
