Nio plans to enter Australia and New Zealand later this year, marking its next major step in expanding beyond China and Europe. The move, expected in the second half of 2026, comes as the EV maker accelerates its push into right-hand-drive markets using its compact Firefly sub-brand as a global testbed.

Australia and New Zealand targeted as Nio widens its footprint

Nio’s upcoming launches in Australia and New Zealand were confirmed by Chris Chen, the company’s head of global business, who said the brand is preparing to introduce its electric vehicles in both markets later this year. These countries represent strategically important right-hand-drive regions, aligning with Nio’s broader effort to diversify geographically amid ongoing trade barriers affecting Chinese EVs in parts of Europe and North America.

Both Australia and New Zealand are seen as mature EV markets with growing consumer demand and relatively open regulatory environments. Nio’s management has emphasized that it only enters new regions when commercial viability is clear, signaling a cautious but deliberate expansion strategy rather than a rapid land-grab approach, according to CNEV Post.

The company said it remains primarily focused on China in the near term while continuing to build an international presence through selective launches across Asia-Pacific and Europe.

Firefly leads the push into right-hand-drive markets

Nio’s overseas expansion is being spearheaded by Firefly, its premium compact EV line designed for urban driving and lower price points. Nio is set to enter Thailand in March with Firefly-branded vehicles, adding another right-hand-drive market to its growing list.

Firefly is currently being showcased in right-hand-drive form at the Singapore auto show, marking the first time Nio has produced a vehicle configured this way. Sales in Singapore are expected to begin around the 2026 Chinese New Year in February, while left-hand-drive versions are already being delivered in Europe.

Nio began mass production of the right-hand-drive Firefly EV in November 2025, with the first shipment sent to Singapore. According to the company, Firefly will continue expanding into additional right-hand-drive markets following its initial launches.

Nio founder and CEO William Li said the Firefly model offers strong commercial potential across most regions, making it a natural choice for global expansion. Management has set an ambitious goal of operating in 40 countries and regions by the end of the year, with Firefly positioned as the brand opening doors to new international markets.
