Suzuki has unveiled its first-ever electric vehicle (EV), the e Vitara. Set to begin production in spring 2025 at Suzuki Motor Gujarat in India, the EV will launch in European, Indian, and Japanese markets by summer 2025.
According to Suzuki, the company’s new e Vitara, inspired by the 2023 eVX concept, sports a distinctive and robust design tailored for a competitive edge in the compact electric SUV market. Measuring 4.28 meters in length with a height of 1.64 meters, the e Vitara stands as a direct rival to models like the Kia EV3 and Peugeot E-2008.
The exterior emphasizes angular, crystalline styling with features such as black scratch-resistant strips, bold angular wheel arches, hidden rear door handles, and a full-width light bar. Notably, the e Vitara is 100mm longer than its combustion-engine predecessor and contains a 200mm increase in wheelbase.
The e Vitara offers versatility in performance through three distinct powertrain configurations. The base model delivers 144 PS (142 horsepower) with a front-wheel-drive (FWD) setup, while the mid-range version upgrades to 174 PS (172 horsepower), also FWD.
For enhanced performance, the all-wheel-drive (AWD) version provides 184 PS (181 horsepower) through a dual-motor configuration, with a 128 kW front motor and a 48 kW rear motor, generating a combined torque of 300 Nm.
Two battery options will support the e Vitara’s power needs, featuring advanced Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) technology. The base model is equipped with a 49 kWh battery, expected to deliver an estimated range of approximately 193 miles.
Meanwhile, the 61 kWh extended-range version is anticipated to achieve a range between 250 miles and 280 miles, providing more flexibility for longer journeys.
For the interior, the e Vitara combines modern design elements with practical technology for an enhanced driver experience. Key features include dual horizontal displays for easy access to vehicle information, physical climate controls, and a rotary gear selector.
The interior design is rounded out with a two-spoke steering wheel, floating center console, and vertical air vents. Additionally, a dedicated Trail mode adds off-road capability, making the e Vitara adaptable to various driving conditions.
“The e Vitara is our first BEV, developed through repeated trial and error to create an easy-to-use BEV for our customers,” said Toshihiro Suzuki, president of Suzuki. The company plans to price the e Vitara competitively, with European starting prices expected around €35,000 (around $38,000).
The EV will be built on Suzuki’s new HEARTECT-e platform, specifically developed for EVs, featuring a lightweight structure and maximized battery capacity. Notably, Toyota will also receive a version of this vehicle as part of an existing partnership agreement.
As a result, this launch represents a major step in Suzuki’s EV strategy with the company planning to expand its BEV lineup while continuing to offer hybrid and conventional powertrains tailored to specific regional needs.
As the e Vitara paves the way for Suzuki’s future BEV lineup, it underscores the brand’s dedication to environmentally conscious solutions while catering to the varied needs of global markets.
