In a bold move that bridges 1990s nostalgia with modern electric mobility, Renault has unveiled the interior design of its upcoming Twingo E-Tech electric vehicle (EV) at the Brussels Motor Show, scheduled for launch in 2026. The new model pays homage to the beloved original Twingo, which sold 2.4 million units during its successful run from 1993 to 2007.

The exterior design of the Twingo E-Tech clearly echoes its predecessor’s distinctive silhouette, featuring stylized LED interpretations of the original’s characteristic headlights and taillights. While the new model adds two rear doors for improved accessibility, clever design work conceals the handles within the C-pillars, maintaining the illusion of a three-door hatchback at first glance.

However, the interior layout marks a departure from the original’s minimalist charm. Gone is the distinctive centrally-mounted digital instrument cluster that characterized the first-generation Twingo. Instead, the new model embraces contemporary technology with a 10.1-inch central display and a separate 7-inch screen for the driver.

Moreover, the iconic semi-spherical hazard button, once a whimsical touch atop the original’s dashboard, returns in a modernized form as a translucent red bubble alongside the air conditioning controls.

Versatile Cabin with Practical Features

In addition, the interior features innovative storage solutions, including spaces beneath the dashboard and front seats for everyday items. The rear bench displays remarkable versatility, offering both sliding and 50/50 folding capabilities to maximize either passenger legroom or cargo space. A panoramic glass roof bathes the cabin in natural light, enhancing the feeling of spaciousness.

Design details throughout the interior showcase both creativity and functionality. Clever touches include a magnetic area on the front headrest for rear passengers to mount their phones, and an elastic strap that doubles as a map pocket and water bottle holder. The upholstery patterns pay tribute to the original Twingo’s colorful aesthetic, while body-colored panels across the dashboard and doors maintain a connection to the exterior design.

Affordable Price and Market Position

Developed by Ampere in just two years, the Twingo E-Tech will be built on the AmpR Small platform and is targeted to enter the European market with a competitive starting price of under €20,000 (around $20,500). This positioning places it as an affordable option below the Renault 5 E-Tech in the company’s expanding EV lineup.

The prototype has already undergone several refinements since its initial unveiling at the 2024 Paris Motor Show, including modifications to the front air intake, reduced rear wheel arch extensions, and redesigned bumpers featuring 3D-printed honeycomb patterns. These changes show Renault’s commitment to optimizing both form and function as the vehicle progresses toward production.
