Porsche has reached a new milestone in its history in venturing into electric vehicles (EVs) by officially starting its Leipzig manufacturing plant in Saxony, Germany. The culmination of years of investment and strategic planning has led to Porsche gearing up to produce its first electric Macan SUV.
The launch event to celebrate Porsche’s milestone was attended by a host of prominent figures including Porsche AG’s Chairman of the Supervisory Board, Dr. Wolfgang Porsche, and Chairman of the Executive Board, Oliver Blume. There were also esteemed political figures present at the event including Federal Minister for Digital and Transport, Dr. Volker Wissing, and State Premier of the Free State of Saxony, Michael Kretschmer.
With around 600 million euros (around $650 million) invested in expanding the Leipzig plant, it comes with several improvements including a new body assembly line made to accommodate the production of EVs alongside traditional gas cars and hybrid models. The aim for the plant’s production of the Macan model as Porsche’s second EV model comes from the success of its Taycan model. Moreover, the Leipzig plant will conduct sustainable practices as the company is committing to cutting down its carbon footprint and minimizing environmental impact.
With plans to deliver over 80% of its new vehicles with an all-electric drive by 2030 according to Porsche, the company will start deliveries of the Macan model in the second half of the year. Chairman of the Executive Board, Oliver Blume, expressed his enthusiasm for Porsche’s journey into electromobility stating, “At Porsche we’re convinced that electromobility is the future. It is the joint task of business, politics and society to drive forward the transformation of mobility together.”
As the automotive landscape is experiencing a shift towards electric mobility, Porsche’s aim to expand its electric mobility efforts will further accelerate its necessary transition. The Porsche Macan EV starting price is $78,800 for the Macan 4 and $105,300 for the Macan Turbo, excluding a $1,650 delivery fee.
