Polestar UK announced a major shift in its sales model and retail presence for its electric vehicle (EV) strategy, aiming to capitalize on its rapid growth in the United Kingdom (UK) market.

According to Polestar, the company is set to expand its retail footprint and transition to a new sales approach. With over 30,000 units delivered to UK buyers since its 2020 launch, Polestar is aiming to expand and elevate these numbers with its new strategy.

Matt Galvin, Managing Director of Polestar UK, expressed enthusiasm for the new strategy stating, “Expanding our retail operations with new and existing partners will enable us to reach more customers. Through these partnerships and expansion, we will capitalize on our strong brand and growing model line-up.”

In terms of Polestar’s new strategy for the UK market, these are the key aspects:

  • Retail Expansion: Polestar plans to increase its “Spaces” (retail locations) from the current nine to 17 across the UK within the next 18 months.
  • New Sales Model: The company is moving away from its previous agency model to a “non-genuine agency sales model.” This change will allow Polestar’s UK retail partners to actively sell EVs from each Space, enhancing customer engagement and potentially improving profitability.
  • Product Line-up: The expansion coincides with the launch of two new electric SUVs – the Polestar 3 and Polestar 4 – broadening the company’s EV offerings.
  • Customer Accessibility: While expanding its physical presence, Polestar will maintain its online configuration and ordering system, providing customers with multiple purchasing options.

John O’Hanlon, CEO of retailer group Waylands, which operates Polestar’s Bristol Space, expressed enthusiasm for the new approach stating, “The new agreement between Waylands and Polestar will allow us to enhance the engagement with existing and future Polestar customers and will help us manage the customer journey in much more detail.”

With this strategic shift in the UK, it is a part of Polestar’s global expansion plan. The company has delivered over 160,000 units across 27 markets worldwide and aims to enter seven new markets by 2025, including France, CzechRepublic, Slovakia, Hungary, Poland, Thailand, and Brazil.

With Polestar’s weaker Q2 delivery numbers, this new strategy for the UK market may assist in shifting those numbers for future quarters. Moreover, Polestar’s plans extend beyond sales and market presence. The company continues to pursue its Polestar 0 project, which aims to produce a climate-neutral car by 2030.

As Polestar UK embarks on this new chapter, the combination of an expanded retail presence, a more flexible sales model, and new EV launches positions the company for continued growth in the UK market.
