Polestar Achieves Groundbreaking 10-Minute Fast Charge with Its Prototype Polestar 5

Polestar has now broken past the limits for electric vehicle (EV) fast charging with its prototype Polestar 5 being charged in merely 10 minutes. With the help of StoreDot, Polestar’s innovative charging technology is paving the way for faster charging experiences for the EV industry. 

In a recent demonstration on Sweden’s west coast, Polestar’s R&D battery specialists team showed a prototype Polestar 5 being charged from 10% to 80% in 10 minutes. The results of this demonstration were due to StoreDot’s silicon-dominant battery cell technology, which improves both energy and power capabilities in EV charging. Moreover, StoreDot’s silicon battery cells also maintain a constant charging speed that does not falter along with its Extreme Fast Charging (XFC) technology in the prototype Polestar 5 to reach charge rates surpassing 370 kW. 

Jens Groot, Polestar’s Battery System Chief Engineer, expressed her thoughts on the achievement stating, “What we did this month is, I believe, a world first. For a standard vehicle without any novel cooling systems, we are looking at charging speeds I haven’t seen anywhere else. We reached consistent speeds of 310-380 kW,” explains Jens.

With Polestar and StoreDot providing great results, the prototype Polestar 5 demonstrates its fast-charging capabilities through a specially developed 77 kWh battery pack that delivers the potential to recoup 200 miles of range in just a ten-minute charge. 

These are promising results for Polestar in terms of its presence in the EV market. With the recent launch of its Polestar 4 in the U.S. market, the company is making new moves that elevate it over its competitors. As the automotive landscape is transitioning towards electric mobility, the increase of EV adoption will be contributed by Polestar with this new achievement as fast charging is breaking past boundaries that make it more appealing to the public.
