In a significant shift in strategy, Polestar has announced that its popular Polestar 2 electric vehicle (EV) will receive a direct successor, contradicting earlier reports that suggested the model would be replaced entirely by the upcoming Polestar 7 SUV.

New CEO Reveals Future Lineup

Michael Lohscheller, Polestar’s new CEO, has outlined a comprehensive vision for the company’s future lineup, which will ultimately include six distinct models. The range will feature the Polestar 3 and 4, the Polestar 5 fastback, the Polestar 6 sports car, and both the next-generation Polestar 2 and the newly announced Polestar 7 mid-sized SUV according to Autocar. This strategic decision is a departure from former CEO Thomas Ingenlath’s previous indication that the Polestar 7 would serve as the de facto replacement for the Polestar 2.

The timing of this announcement is particularly relevant given Polestar’s current market challenges. The company experienced a 15% decline in global EV sales in 2024, delivering just 44,851 units worldwide. However, Lohscheller remains optimistic, projecting 2025 to be “the strongest year in Polestar’s history” with targeted sales growth of 30-35%.

Shifting Production to Europe

A crucial aspect of Polestar’s strategy involves shifting production of the next-generation Polestar 2 to Europe, likely at Geely’s new plant in Slovakia. This move addresses significant challenges posed by current U.S. trade policies, which have imposed substantial tariffs on Chinese EVs. The current Polestar 2, manufactured in China, faces uncertain prospects in the U.S. market beyond 2025 due to these trade restrictions.

The next-generation Polestar 2 and Polestar 7 will share a new ground-up EV platform, marking a technological advancement for the brand. While specific timing remains unclear, Lohscheller indicated both models are “years away,” with the Polestar 2’s successor scheduled to arrive after the Polestar 7’s introduction, likely toward the end of the decade.

Targeting Discontented Tesla Owners

In a noteworthy strategic move, Lohscheller has also positioned Polestar to capitalize on potential dissatisfaction among Tesla customers. The CEO has directed his sales executives to target Tesla buyers who may be uncomfortable with Elon Musk’s increasing political involvement, particularly in European affairs according to Bloomberg. This approach comes as Tesla experienced its first sales decline in over a decade last year, with its U.S. EV market share dropping to around 44% in the most recent quarter.

Furthermore, Polestar’s aim to maintain an electric sedan offering in its lineup, despite the industry’s general shift toward SUVs, shows the brand’s aim to serve diverse market segments. The company has already expanded its U.S. presence from a single model to three offerings, with additional launches planned. The recent integration with Tesla’s Supercharger network, providing access to nearly 18,000 additional charging stations across the U.S., further strengthens Polestar’s market position.

Strategy Focused on Challenges and Growth

With this comprehensive strategy update, it suggests Polestar is taking decisive steps to address both immediate challenges and long-term market opportunities, while maintaining its commitment to the sedan segment that helped establish its brand identity.
