Polestar is expanding its sustainability strategy by increasing the use of recycled materials in its EV batteries. The company confirmed that both the Polestar 2 and Polestar 3 now feature batteries containing at least 50% recycled cobalt, marking a key step in its push toward circular manufacturing.
The update was announced in a press release from Polestar, highlighting broader efforts to reduce reliance on virgin materials and extend battery lifecycles.
Polestar said its latest milestone brings 50% recycled cobalt content to batteries used in the Polestar 2 and Polestar 3.
The move is part of a broader effort to improve supply chain transparency and reduce the environmental impact of battery production, according to Polestar’s press release.
Polestar has been working toward circular material use for several years, including earlier initiatives like blockchain-traced cobalt sourcing, which aimed to improve accountability across its supply chain.
The company said increasing recycled content helps reduce dependence on newly mined materials while supporting more sustainable battery manufacturing practices.

Polestar’s circular approach extends beyond materials to include battery refurbishment and reuse.
The company partners with Volvo Cars battery centers to refurbish high-voltage batteries. Vehicles requiring replacements receive refurbished batteries with equivalent state-of-health, helping extend battery life and reduce waste.
Polestar is also building recycling partnerships across global markets to improve material recovery and meet regulatory requirements.
In addition, the automaker continues to incorporate recycled aluminum, steel, and textiles into its vehicles, alongside design strategies that prioritize modularity and reduced material complexity.
Polestar said it has reduced relative CO₂ emissions per vehicle by 25% since 2020, while continuing to publish full lifecycle assessments for its models as part of its transparency efforts.
