Mercedes Benz Owners Affected By The Recall Issue Will Receive A Notification Mail Starting July 23

Mercedes Benz has issued a voluntary recall for nearly 15,000 electric vehicles (EVs) in its lineup in the United States (U.S.) due to potential software issues related to the battery management system.
Conducted in collaboration with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the recall addresses the concerning issue that could lead to an unexpected shutdown of the high-voltage battery while driving on the road. In detail, the battery management system could be overloaded with diagnostic requests from other control units which could trigger the opening of contactors in the high-voltage battery. As a result, the loss of propulsion without any warning on the instrument cluster poses a safety risk to the driver and passengers according to NHTSA.

The affected models amount to 14,912 EVs and this recall of Mercedes Benz EV models include various trims from the 2023 model year or newer of the Mercedes-AMG EQE, Mercedes-AMG EQE SUV, Mercedes-AMG EQS, Mercedes-Benz EQE, EQE SUV, EQS, EQS SUV, and Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV according to NHTSA.
In response to this issue, Mercedes Benz owners with the affected EVs will receive notification letters that will instruct them to schedule appointments with Mercedes-Benz dealerships for a free software update of the battery management system.
Interestingly, Mercedes Benz also faced recalls last year with certain models including the EQE, EQS, and EQS SUV models due to faults in the electric drivetrain software management response logic. Moreover, another recall occurred with its EQS EVs that could have experienced a fault with the ESP monitoring software last year as well.
With Mercedes Benz addressing the important software issues in its EVs, the efforts from the company to continually improve its EV technology will be critical and observed on any potential issues shortly. Affected Mercedes Benz owners will receive a notification mail sometime starting July 23, 2024.
