Mercedes-Benz Will Trial Its Advanced Self-Driving Technology On Both Highways And Urban Roads In Beijing, China

As Mercedes-Benz has been making waves in the electric vehicle (EV) market, the company has become the first international automaker to receive approval for testing Level 4 autonomous driving technology in Beijing, China.
In detail, Mercedes-Benz AG announced that it had been granted permission to conduct trials of its Level 4 self-driving system on Beijing’s highways and urban roads. Level 4 autonomy refers to vehicles that can perform all driving tasks within certain conditions, with human override still an option.
According to Bloomberg, the tests will include complex maneuvers such as parking, reversing, and making left turns in busy traffic without driver intervention. On highways, the vehicles will demonstrate their ability to change lanes to avoid slower traffic and navigate toll booths autonomously.
As a result, this approval puts Mercedes-Benz at the forefront of autonomous driving development in China, ahead of competitors such as Tesla and General Motors GM). While Tesla is working to bring its Full Self-Driving (FSD) technology to China and has permission to test in parts of Shanghai, it is currently considered a Level 2 system requiring constant driver supervision. Similarly, GM received approval last year to trial self-driving Cadillacs in Shanghai.
Notably, this strategic move arrives as China ramps up its efforts to develop autonomous driving technology. In June, authorities approved nine Chinese automakers including BYD, NIO, and Chongqing Changan Automobile, to test Level 3 and Level 4 technology on certain roads. In addition, 20 Chinese cities have been selected to build out infrastructure supporting autonomous driving.
Mercedes-Benz’s current most advanced commercially available system, Drive Pilot, is ranked at Level 3 and is limited to specific regions and conditions. It can operate without driver monitoring for short periods but is restricted to speeds up to 40 mph in traffic jams on select highways.
With the company’s push into Level 4 testing in Beijing signifies its goal to remain at the cutting edge of automotive technology, Mercedes-Benz could potentially leverage this technology for Robotaxi services or license it to other companies in the future. As the race for fully autonomous vehicles is intensifying, Mercedes-Benz’s achievement in Beijing positions the company as a key player in shaping the future of mobility.
